When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 65

“Really?” Nelly lifted an eyebrow.

Brody nodded and pulled out his checkbook, scrawling his signature across the paper. “One million.”

Nelly looked at him like he’d lost his mind.

Was he still drunk or something?

“Alright, deal.”

She grabbed the check before he could change his mind and headed off to get dressed.

A million wasn't exactly a fortune, but money was money. Anyone who turned down a windfall like this would be crazy. Brody never gave money away so easily. She’d be a fool not to take it.

Nelly reappeared a few minutes later in a fresh blue tweed suit. The fit was perfect, the style young and bold, and the color made her look even more vibrant. For a second, Brody couldn’t take his eyes off her.

“New outfit?” he asked.

Brody almost never commented on her clothes. It caught her off guard. Nelly just answered with a quiet “Yeah.”

“It looks good,” he said.

Nelly smiled, then couldn’t help teasing, “Not bad, right? Still, I bet it’s nothing compared to what Sheila wears.”

Brody went silent.

His face looked like a storm cloud.

Nelly felt a little lighter after that. She didn’t want to push him too far, though, so she quickly changed the subject. “Let’s take my new car. I’ll drive.”

“You got a new car?”

“Yeah.”

She led him to the elevator.

Down in the garage, she unlocked her car from a distance. The headlights flashed on a brand-new, limited edition white Porsche.

This car had to be worth at least three million.

Brody’s eyes flickered with amusement. Eight million, huh. That was a statement.

Once again, Nelly was nothing like he thought. She always seemed so practical, so focused on work and family, but apparently, when it came to spending money, she didn’t hesitate.
