When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 51

The lady in her striking dress was called Yulia, Westhaven’s most celebrated embroidery artist. The man beside her, Simon, ran everything for Cass, the country’s top womenswear brand. They were both here for a big collaboration, which made the destroyed design sketches a total disaster. No matter how sincerely Carrie apologized or how much Brody offered in compensation, it couldn’t make up for what they’d lost.

Once everyone understood what happened, the organizer gently took the ruined original from Yulia. “May I borrow this for a moment? Actually, Miss X asked us to check on things. She’s admired your work for a long time and has some background in design herself. She’d really like to help if she can.” The organizer spoke politely, pointing out where to go. “She’s sitting right in the front row.”

Nelly stood on the platform across the room, catching their eyes even from a distance. Her mask glittered in the lights, and her gown shimmered with every move she made. She was breathtaking. People might ignore Garland Inc., but everyone at the event knew who this mysterious guest was. In Westhaven, no one would dare disrespect the Watson family. That was just asking for trouble.

Simon didn’t hesitate. “If Miss X wants to help, we would be honored. Absolutely.” Yulia, beaten down by the day already, didn’t protest. If she could connect with the Watson family, maybe the disaster wouldn’t sting so much.

Sheila was still comforting a tearful Carrie, who just wanted a hug and didn’t care at all about what was happening around her. Brody, though, kept his eyes glued to the platform.

A staff member handed the sketchbook over to Nelly. She listened quietly as they explained the mess, and though she felt a pang of frustration, she didn’t let it show. She’d never spoiled her daughter, but Brody always stepped in to protect Carrie. What kind of person Carrie would become if she stuck by Sheila’s side? At the end of the day, Carrie was her own child.

Nelly rubbed her temples, then picked up a pencil. In just a few minutes, she’d brought the ruined design back to life, nearly as good as new. She’d always been great at sketching and loved fashion design, so she knew the work of all the top designers inside out. Guessing at Yulia’s usual style, she quickly outlined the core elements, which were more than enough for Yulia to finish restoring the piece.

Jonah watched her work, his expression growing softer with every stroke of her pencil. She was absolutely radiant under the bright lights.

When Yulia got the sketchbook back, she couldn’t say a word. She stared at the platform, eyes wide with admiration. “That’s the Watson family heiress? She’s so young, and already that talented…” she whispered to herself. Some of the details Nelly drew were even better than Yulia’s own original ideas.

Simon was over the moon. “Thank you so much, Miss X. We are so grateful.”

Sheila jumped in. “Now that the design’s fixed, there’s no need to keep blaming a little kid, right?”

Neither Simon nor Yulia had any love for Sheila, but Carrie was just a child. Now that things were sorted, they didn’t want to make more trouble with Garland Inc. Simon turned to Brody. “Mr. Garland, since everything’s resolved, let’s just move on. I hope you can let it go.”
