“It’s okay. We can help ourselves.” Brody’s voice broke the tense silence.
Nelly suddenly noticed her bowl had disappeared. The maid had taken it to serve her some soup, but before she could finish, Brody stepped in and stopped her.
Victoria looked annoyed as she stepped back, head lowered, obviously not happy about leaving but doing it anyway.
Brody’s eyes followed Victoria for a moment, then he turned to Nelly. “You shouldn’t drink that soup.”
Brody was picking up on something, and Nelly felt it too. The maid was acting way too attentive, putting all her effort into serving Nelly instead of Nicholas, the host, or even the kids. She barely looked at anyone else, and her whole vibe was sneaky.
“Mom, that soup smells amazing. Can I try it?” Carrie reached her spoon toward the bowl Brody had just grabbed, but before she could even taste it, Brody took it away from her, quick as ever.
The little commotion was enough to catch Nicholas’s attention. “What’s going on?”
“Uncle Nicholas, maybe I’m just being paranoid, but something’s off about that maid,” Brody said, not beating around the bush.
Nicholas’s face changed. He clearly didn’t want to talk about family stuff in front of everyone, but Nelly had already figured it out. “Wait. Is that April’s mom?”
Nicholas looked surprised. “You know her?”
Nelly nodded and quickly explained her past issues with Victoria. She never thought Nicholas would let Victoria stay around April.
“Uncle Nicholas, I know she’s April’s mother, but for April’s sake, I really don’t think you should keep her here. The last time April almost got hurt, it was because of the emotional damage Victoria caused. Kids don’t just bounce back from that kind of trauma.”
Nelly was just trying to look out for April. She didn’t want to interfere in Nicholas’s private life.
But as soon as she finished, Nicholas’s face completely changed. “You know about April’s accident?”
