Nelly’s words started out soft, almost gentle, but then her voice dropped to a whisper, meant only for Sheila. Sheila’s lips pressed together so hard it felt like she might draw blood. She lowered her head and forced herself to answer, “I’m really happy you can forgive me.”
Nelly gave her a little smile. “Oh, trust me, there’s even more for you to be happy about coming up.” She patted Sheila on the shoulder, then turned to Tina.
“Tina, you’ve known for a while that Brody and I are getting divorced. That’s why you’re always hanging around your new soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Sheila, isn’t it? If that’s the case, maybe next time we see each other, you can stop holding onto me so tightly. Could you do that?”
Nelly’s words hit Tina hard. Her face turned bright red, burning with embarrassment.
Nicholas heard everything and suddenly things clicked for him. Since Nelly and Brody weren’t officially divorced yet, Tina—still Nelly’s mother-in-law—spending all her time with Sheila wasn’t right.
He started to realize maybe he’d been too quick to judge Nelly. When it came to relationships, Nelly hadn’t been unfair to Sheila at all.
Tina couldn’t meet Nelly’s eyes. She just pursed her lips, nodded, and mumbled so quietly it was barely audible. “Alright…”
Once things calmed down, Nicholas quickly told his people to escort Sheila and Tina out. With the outsiders gone, the room felt different—it was just family now.
“Nelly, why did you hide your marriage?” Nicholas asked, getting straight to the point.
Nelly had seen this coming. From the moment Nicholas showed up and she realized he and Sheila knew each other, she knew the truth was bound to come out eventually.
