When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 200

“I can help your son get the treatment he needs.” Nicholas turned to face Victoria, his steps slow and deliberate as he moved closer.

A hint of hope flashed in Victoria’s eyes, but it faded just as quickly when she heard the rest of what he had to say.

“Starting today, you’ll be working here.”

Nicholas wasn’t giving her a choice. He was making it clear this was an order. Victoria was a good cook, so having her stay and prepare meals for April was his way of letting her make up for what she’d missed as a mother. But to protect April, Nicholas would always keep Victoria’s son as leverage.

As for Anthony, Nicholas didn’t care to see him again. He would pull a few strings and send Anthony away from Westhaven. Whatever comfortable life Anthony had gotten used to, that was over.

Once Victoria’s situation was settled, it was time for lunch.

Nicholas had set up a lunch date with Sheila at a private Michelin-star restaurant. He was genuinely grateful to her, so he’d even checked her preferences and brought in Westhaven’s most celebrated chef for the occasion.

Sheila had clearly put effort into her appearance. Her makeup was fresh and sweet, and she wore a simple white dress paired with a fitted blazer. She looked elegant and gentle, and she wanted Nicholas to notice. After all, he was the real head of the Watson family. Sheila knew this was her chance to leave an impression.

Unlike last time, Sheila was relaxed. She carried herself with confidence, and her conversation had a natural grace. Since Nicholas had invited her, she figured April didn’t know who had actually saved her. Sheila had done some digging and learned that it was a man and a woman who brought April in, and they’d left before anyone could thank them.

“Ms. Olson, last time we barely had a moment to talk. Please, make yourself at home today.” Nicholas handed Sheila a beautifully wrapped gift.

It was a carefully chosen gift box and a limited edition bag from a luxury brand. He knew these things always made girls smile.

Sheila hesitated, shaking her head. “This is way too much. I can’t take it.”

“You saved April’s life. These are just little tokens. From now on, whatever concerns you concerns me too.”

Nicholas insisted, and Sheila had no choice but to accept. Her modesty only made Nicholas like her more. He’d already looked into her background and discovered she was a well-known comic artist, talented and respected.

“Mr. Watson, you’re giving me too much credit. I only did what I should do,” Sheila said, still feeling a bit embarrassed.

After a little small talk, the food arrived. Nicholas was the perfect gentleman, always attentive to Sheila. Even though he was old enough to be her father, there was something magnetic about him that was impossible to ignore. More than once, his teasing and compliments made her cheeks flush.

“I heard you give private drawing lessons to kids sometimes?” Nicholas asked after lunch, leading Sheila to a cafe.
