When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 194

When Teddy stepped out of the hospital, Jonah was already waiting for him out front. Teddy slid into the car, and Jonah’s eyes immediately landed on his hand. It had been fine earlier, but now it was wrapped in gauze.

“What happened?”

“Oh, just a little incident with someone at the hospital.” Teddy grinned, then casually unwrapped the bandage. The cut underneath had already healed over.

“An incident? Are you okay?” Jonah looked worried, glancing back at the hospital. He’d seen a police car pull up earlier.

Teddy gave him the short version. He’d helped out a strange female doctor, and she’d apparently mistaken him for someone else.

Jonah frowned. “Are you sure she doesn’t have some hidden agenda?”

“I doubt it. She didn’t seem that type.” Teddy smiled again, rolling the wad of cotton in his palm.

But Jonah’s face was still tense. Teddy reached over and gave his shoulder a reassuring pat. “You’re being paranoid. Relax. I just got back, remember?”

Jonah didn’t argue. He just turned the wheel and drove Teddy back to his hotel.

Jonah was supposed to fly out to Country M that morning. He’d made it all the way to the airport before Teddy called. Last-minute orders had brought Teddy back to Westhaven for work.

Howard didn’t want to see Jonah, but he had handed Teddy a calligraphy scroll to give Nicholas. Jonah figured there was nothing more to ask of Howard, so he’d gone to pick up Teddy instead.

Teddy had recently been put in charge of some domestic pandemic prevention work. He’d barely arrived in Westhaven before heading straight to Central Hospital to check things out. Both of them were exhausted by the time they reached the hotel. Teddy went straight to shower.

He assumed Jonah would leave to get some rest, but when he came out of the bathroom, Jonah was still in the suite.

Jonah checked his watch. “Nicholas is busy today. Let’s go see him tonight.”

“What’s the rush? We can go tomorrow. I’m wiped out.” Teddy shot him a look, grabbed a cold beer from the mini-fridge, took a long sip, and tossed another to Jonah.

Jonah caught it and set it on the coffee table. “Tonight. You have three hours to rest.” With that, he stood up and walked out without waiting for an answer.

“Hey…” Teddy started to protest, but Jonah was already gone. He was so pushy. He acted less like a friend and more like an older family member bossing him around.

Teddy, who was known for being a big shot in military circles, could only meekly go along with Jonah. He almost felt a little hurt.

He didn’t get it. Jonah was always the calm and steady type, especially when it came to Watson family business. The Watsons just treated him like a tool and Jonah always had his own plans, as long as nothing went wrong.

So why was he acting like this now? He seemed even more invested than if it were his own problem.
