When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 190

“Uncle Nicholas, I know I’m not exactly qualified to ask you for anything, but can’t we just think about a long-term partnership?” Nelly lowered herself as much as she could, her voice soft and pleading. Still, her words sounded empty, almost desperate.

Nicholas gave her a small smile. “Sorry. I don’t think we’ll ever be allies.”

Nelly refused to back down. “Is it because of Britney? Or is it about my father?”

Nicholas never cared about business deals. His only weakness was his family, and Nelly was family too. But it was Britney and Christopher who really shaped his feelings toward Nelly. That was the only real argument she had left.

Before Nicholas could respond, someone hurried in, whispering something urgent in his ear. His expression shifted, just for a moment, before he stood up. “Nelly, something’s come up. I need to go. Let’s stop here for today. I’ll have someone send you some tea—give your Uncle Felix my regards.”

“Uncle Nicholas…” Nelly stood up quickly, but Nicholas was already leaving, his words hanging in the air. He strode out of the cafe with his team close behind.

At the doorway, a servant stopped Nelly and gently invited her to pick out some tea to take home.

Nicholas’s car raced through the city straight to Central Hospital.

Soon, he was walking into the pediatric ward. Inside April’s room, a doctor and nurse were doing their rounds when a group of people stepped in. The man in front wore a long wool coat and was surrounded by bodyguards in sharp suits. He had a commanding presence.

“I’m her father,” Nicholas said, his voice calm as he went directly to April’s bedside.

April was hooked up to an IV. She’d had a high fever that morning, and she was only just starting to cool down. She was still asleep, her little face pale and tired.

The hospital had planned to call her mother, but Jessie had phoned ahead and asked them to wait until April woke up before making any decisions. April’s case was sensitive. There was a chance she’d suffered abuse at home. If that was true, the police would have to get involved.

“Her father? Are you Mr. Wallace?” the doctor asked, a bit surprised.

Nicholas didn’t answer. One of his men immediately handed over a business card. The name Watson Corporation made everyone tense up.
