When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 181

She always knew April was stubborn, so she should have shown more patience.

“Alright, alright, let’s not argue. We need to focus on finding her. What if she’s been taken, or something bad happened to her?”

Anthony couldn’t hide his frustration. He had just walked in the door and was already grabbing his things to head out again, Victoria right behind him.

Victoria stopped in her tracks, her eyes wide. “Anthony, do you think… could it be him?”

April wasn’t Anthony’s daughter. She was the result of something that never should have happened.

Back then, Victoria worked as a private chef for a mysterious, influential man in a luxury villa. One night, he came home unexpectedly. She never knew if he was drunk or just out of control, but in the kitchen, he forced himself on her.

Victoria tried to seek justice, but people kept showing up, threatening her, warning her not to go to the police. Soon after, Anthony lost his job too.

When they had nowhere else to turn, that man reappeared. He’d learned Victoria was pregnant with his child. He offered the Wallace family a huge sum of money, but only if Victoria agreed to have the baby for him.

Victoria hated him. The thought of accepting this offer made her sick, but with Anthony out of work and their little boy only two years old and desperately needing money, she forced herself to say yes.

Their son had always been sick, born with weak kidneys. He spent his childhood in hospitals. Even with money for treatment, he would eventually need a transplant.

That’s when Victoria thought about the baby she was carrying. Maybe, just maybe, this child could save her son. So she went back on the deal, packed up with Anthony and their son, and moved far away.

It was impulsive. She knew that man could find them easily. But for some reason, all these years, he never came after them.

Maybe fate was on her side. April turned out to be a perfect match for her brother.

Victoria thought the nightmare was finally over. Now… was he back?

Anthony’s face went pale as Victoria spoke. April was always a good kid. No matter how upset she got, she should’ve come home by now, unless someone took her.

Victoria had lived in fear for years, always watching over April, even calling the kindergarten every single day just to check on her.

And… even if he hadn’t been the one to take April, in a city like Westhaven, he could find people faster than the police.
