When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 156

Felix had asked Nelly to keep her marriage under wraps. Things were tense with Brody, and the last thing he needed was for the Watson family to get their hands on any more ammunition. At least for now, it was better to keep everything quiet.

That was why Felix had moved in secret last night. Still, using mercenaries meant word was bound to get out. But honestly, Nancy was probably just taking a guess. She’d overheard from Rudy that Felix had apparently hired mercenaries, and that Jonah hadn’t come home. Nothing major had happened with the Watson family lately, so if there was any drama, it had to be coming from Nelly’s side.

“Did something happen to you last night?” Nancy asked.

Nelly hadn’t even figured out what to say yet when Jonah turned to look at her. He was asking the same thing as Nancy, but there was something in his eyes. Nelly picked up on it right away.

“Me? Why, what would have happened to me?” she replied, trying to play it cool.

Jonah was giving her a hint. There was no way Nancy could know for sure; she was just fishing for information. Even though Nancy was working with them now, this was the kind of thing that was better left unsaid.

Nancy watched them, a little smirk tugging at her lips. “I just heard there was some trouble on Felix’s end last night. I thought maybe you got caught up in it. We’re all on the same side here. I was just worried, you know?”

Nelly felt her cheeks burn as she looked down at her food, poking at it for something to do. “Nothing happened. I was just busy. Came home and went straight to sleep.”

Nancy’s eyes flickered over her. “Then what’s with the bandage on your forehead?” She turned to Jonah. “And what about you? Did you hurt your hand?”

“Oh, I just bumped into something yesterday,” Nelly said quickly, touching her forehead. She’d switched to a smaller bandage, but it was still obvious.

Jonah spoke up, “I got hurt working out.”

Nancy looked between them, her curiosity obvious. “What a coincidence. You both managed to get hurt on the same day.”

She picked up her coffee and took a sip, her eyes never leaving their faces. Nelly avoided her gaze, feeling awkward. Jonah looked calm, but there was a clear edge to him, like he was ready for trouble.

Nancy finally set her coffee down and turned to Nelly, a teasing look on her face. “You and Jonah are so close. I bet you know all about what happened between him and me, right?”

“Nancy!” Jonah’s voice was sharp, startling Nelly so much she dropped the piece of pastry she’d been holding. The room went silent, tension thick in the air. Jonah’s glare was practically lethal. Nelly had never seen him look at anyone like that.

She couldn’t help it—she was curious, too. She’d always figured Nancy didn’t like Jonah because he’d replaced her at Felix’s side, but maybe there was more to it.

Jonah clenched his jaw as Nancy went on, “Oh, come on, Jonah. Is whatever happened between us so terrible that you can’t even tell Nelly?”
