When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 151

“Brody, you can thank her, just don’t bring me into it. We? Who said anything about we?” Sheila’s helpless act was really starting to get under Nelly’s skin, but it was Brody’s words that finally set her off. Did he seriously bring Sheila here expecting Nelly to say thank you? Sure, Sheila had saved her daughter, but with their history, there was no way she could bring herself to be grateful. Honestly, Nelly thought she was being more than polite just by standing there and listening.

“Alright, you should go get some rest now.” Brody didn’t even acknowledge Nelly. He just handed the food container to Sheila. “Have some food.” He knew Nelly could blow up at the smallest thing, and he had no intention of getting drawn into another argument.

Sheila had just been rescued from the kidnappers. She wasn’t as tough as Nelly, and the doctor had warned them that her mental state was fragile. With her history of depression, she needed to be careful with her emotions. Brody felt like if saving his daughter ended up hurting Sheila, he’d never forgive himself. He figured Nelly probably felt the same way.

“Okay.” Sheila answered softly, taking the food. She glanced at Nelly, looking like she wanted to say something, but she just swallowed it and turned to leave.

This time, as Sheila tried to walk away, Nelly stepped right in front of her. “Ms. Olson, you said you saved Carrie, right? I have a few questions for you.”

“For Carrie’s sake, don’t make things harder for her.” Brody grabbed Nelly’s arm, and Carrie quickly hugged her mother’s leg, her little voice trembling. “Mommy.” She was scared her parents were about to start fighting.

“Asking a few questions is making things hard? Or would you rather I take my questions to the police?” Nelly shook off Brody’s hand and looked Sheila straight in the eyes.

Sheila straightened up. “Of course, Ms. Stewart. Ask me anything.”

“Did you know the kidnappers?” Nelly’s question came out of nowhere, and Sheila’s face went pale.

“Are you accusing me of something?” Sheila’s voice shook.

“Relax. I’m just asking.” Nelly’s lips curled into a half-smile. “When I was dealing with the kidnappers, they seemed to know exactly what they wanted. They were after money and willing to kill for it. If Carrie was really their target, she would’ve been dead already. And if you had gotten in their way, you’d be dead too… So why did you get away with just a few cuts?”

Sheila didn’t know how to answer for a moment. Then she said, “You’d have to ask the kidnappers that. How would I know? Are you saying I’m a suspect just because I survived?”

“I never said that. I’m just thinking, maybe the kidnappers knew you, so they went easy on you.” Nelly’s words were getting sharper. Brody couldn’t stand it anymore.

“Nelly, when did you get so mean? I know you don’t like her, but she saved Carrie.”
