When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 130

“Have you ever tried this snack? And this drink is actually really good, want to give it a shot?”

Nelly wandered the aisles, picking out her favorite things and showing them to Jonah. She knew he wasn’t the type to eat junk food or drink soda, but she just loved sharing things she liked.

“Sure,” Jonah replied.

Honestly, Nelly had expected him to say no, but he never turned her down. Every time she pointed something out, he tossed two into the cart. Before long, their cart was overflowing, way more than they could possibly eat in one night.

At the checkout, before Nelly could even get her phone out, Jonah had already paid.

“I think we might have gone a little overboard,” Nelly admitted as they loaded everything into the car, feeling a little embarrassed.

Jonah didn’t answer right away. Instead, he paused and glanced back over his shoulder.

“What’s up?” Nelly asked, noticing he seemed distracted.

“Someone’s following us.”

Jonah said it so calmly, you’d think he was talking about the weather.

That snapped Nelly to attention. She quickly checked the rearview mirror. Sure enough, a car was slowly trailing behind them. It even looked kind of familiar.

“When did you notice?” Nelly asked, her nerves kicking in.

“I think they’ve been there since we left the restaurant.” Jonah kept his eyes on the road, driving steady. He hadn’t been sure at first, but the car had been on their tail the whole way. It disappeared when they went into the convenience store, but showed up again as soon as they came out.

“Should we go check it out…”

“How well do you handle this sort of thing?” Jonah cut her off before she could finish.

“Handle what?”

“Losing a tail can get a little wild.”

The streetlights flashed across Jonah’s face, highlighting his sharp features and giving him a mischievous, almost dangerous look.

“I… I think I’m good...” Nelly managed to say.

The second she did, Jonah hit the gas. For someone who always seemed so calm and collected, he drove like a pro. He drifted through corners and took sharp turns, making it look effortless. Nelly clung to her seat, her heart racing.

It only lasted a few minutes. After a couple of quick turns down side streets, the car following them was gone.

“You okay?” Jonah asked as he slowed down, glancing at her right away.

Nelly took a deep breath. “Yeah. I’m fine.”

Jonah still looked concerned. “Did I freak you out?”

“No, actually… it was kind of awesome. You’re a really good driver. The drifting was… wow…”

She found herself grinning, a little breathless.
