When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 124

“Come on, eat up. You have to scoop it all together and make some noise while you eat. That’s the only way it tastes good.” Nelly watched Brody’s stiff expression, like he couldn’t even bring himself to try it, and added, “Never mind. You never listen to me anyway.”

She was just teasing him. Honestly, she didn’t think he’d actually do it. But after hesitating for a moment, Brody picked up the bowl, used his fork to mix the food into the soup, and took a bite. He was so proper, barely making a sound, but he ate too fast and ended up choking.

Nelly handed him a napkin, grinning. “Is it any better now?”

Brody wiped his mouth, shooting her a frosty look. Sure, he was full faster, but the taste hadn’t changed. She just wanted to mess with him. He knew it, and he still went along with it. All because she said he never listened to her. Was he really that bad?

After dinner, Nelly loaded the dishwasher and looked at Brody. “Alright, your fever’s gone and you’ve had dinner. Time for you to head home.”

“You’re the one who messed up our appointment today. Next time, it’ll be on my schedule.”

Brody didn’t budge from his chair. He stared at a fancy shopping bag sitting in the corner of the living room. It’s a limited edition men’s tie from a luxury brand.

Why would Nelly buy something like that? Who was it for? They were about to get divorced, so it couldn’t possibly be for him. Brody’s jaw clenched. Before Nelly could say anything else, he got up and walked over. By the time she realized, he’d already opened the bag.

It was a dark gray striped tie.

“Brody, what are you doing? That’s not yours!”

Nelly tried to snatch it back, but Brody was already putting it on.

“You have good taste.”

“It’s not for you! Take it off!”

Nelly’s frustration boiled over. She reached for the tie, but Brody caught her wrist.

“Then who’s it for? We’re still married, and you’re already getting gifts for another man?”

His voice was calm, but every word felt icy. The way he stared at her was almost threatening, like if she admitted it, he’d completely lose it.

“Brody, why do you care? You have Sheila. It shouldn’t matter who I buy gifts for, right?”

Nelly felt a quick pang of guilt, but it vanished as fast as it came. She straightened, indignant. The tie was for Jonah. She wasn’t Brody, desperate to move on before their marriage was even over.

“Don’t forget our prenup. Until we’re officially divorced, you’re mine. Heart and body, both.”

Brody pulled her closer, his words tight and clipped. His lips were still pale, but he looked as fierce as ever.
