Even though Nelly had always known Brody wasn’t the type to fall in love, she still couldn’t help how she felt. He’d always treated her like a partner, nothing more, maybe even a useful pawn. It all just seemed painfully ironic.
Brody’s voice was quiet, almost gentle. “I remember… you never took it off.” He sounded almost sad, but that couldn’t be right. Brody didn’t get sad. That was probably her imagination.
Nelly stared at the floor. “Why are you bringing this up?”
“I’m just curious…” Brody took a shaky breath, like it hurt to fill his lungs.
Nelly tried to pull her hand away, already halfway out the door in her mind, but he kept going. “Can someone’s words change in an instant? Or is it their heart that changes so easily?”
Her chest tightened. She watched him, and memories flashed through her mind. When they got married, she’d signed the prenup, picked up the marriage certificate, slipped on the ring, and promised she’d never leave him. Brody knew how much she loved him. He knew, and yet, after stomping all over her heart, he still had the nerve to ask her that?
Nelly let out a cold little sneer.
Brody frowned, confusion flickering in his eyes. The fever had left him weak, barely holding onto reality. Still, he wanted to watch her, to listen to her voice, to fill that restless ache inside him. He didn’t understand, but something about it hurt, whether it was the fever or something else.
“Other people could probably answer that, but you, Brody… you’ll never get it.” She tried to keep her cool but couldn’t. After saying her piece, she didn’t bother staying by his side. She stood up and left.
Jessie arrived soon after and quickly gave Brody a shot. Nelly kept her distance the whole time, staying far away until Jessie finished and came over to her. Brody was finally asleep on the sofa, his breathing steady.
“He’s got a heart problem?” Nelly whispered.
Jessie hesitated before nodding. She wasn’t supposed to share this. The Garland family had made that very clear. But now that Nelly already knew, there was no reason to keep secrets.
