Once everyone had cleared out of the main hall, Rudy lost it. He scooped up all the money from the floor, chucked it back down, and stomped on it over and over, his anger boiling over. Nelly. Jonah. Felix… Just wait. You’ll all see…
…
After leaving the old estate, Nancy and Nelly exchanged only a few words before heading their separate ways. Felix noticed and hurried to catch up with Nancy, calling after her, but she didn’t even pause. She just got in her car and drove off.
Back at the Watson house, Felix found a moment alone with Nelly. He sent Jonah away, then called her into his study. Nelly already knew what he wanted to ask, so she didn’t bother with small talk.
“I offered Nancy a partnership and gave her shares in the company,” she said, getting straight to the point. “From now on, she’s signing with us exclusively.”
Felix stared at her, stunned. “How did you pull that off? Nancy would never leave the Chandler family for you. She only went to them because of me.”
“She agreed because I promised her half the inheritance if I win.” Nelly didn’t try to hide the deal she’d made.
She had only learned the real story from Jonah. All those years ago, Felix had used Nancy’s mother as a bargaining chip to help Christopher get his start. He handed her over to powerful men. Nancy’s mother had died of depression after that. Felix didn’t want Nancy interfering with his and Christopher’s ambitions, so he sent his own daughter overseas. Once Nancy was gone, Jonah moved into the Watson house, quickly proving himself and becoming Felix’s right hand. The Chandler family had told Nancy the truth, and after that, she cut Felix out of her life completely.
Nelly had been shocked to hear what Felix had done for Christopher, and honestly, it made her sick. So when she met Nancy, she didn’t just promise half the inheritance. She also promised to help Nancy find the men who had hurt her mother.
Nelly and Felix were just business partners. Once the inheritance was settled, she’d have nothing more to do with him. By then, Nancy would have more say in the Watson family, and she could deal with her father however she wanted.
The deal Nelly offered was too good for Nancy to refuse, and it was exactly what she needed most. Besides, Nelly had told Nancy that she and her own mother had also been abandoned by Christopher. She hated Christopher and the Watson family just as much as Nancy hated Felix.
But Nelly hadn’t told Felix everything about this deal. To him, as long as there was enough profit, any partnership could work out. Still, he couldn’t agree with her plan.
“Nancy isn’t that capable. You’re giving her way too much. Just to get at the Chandler family? It’s not worth it.”
“Maybe not,” Nelly replied coolly, “but I don’t care. I think Christopher’s money should go to the people that need it. Isn’t that fair?”
Felix wanted to argue, but the words just wouldn’t come. He watched Nelly, realizing that in just a few days, she’d changed. She wasn’t acting on impulse anymore. Now, she knew exactly what she was doing, and she had the guts to go through with it. Felix had thought she could only function under his guidance, but now it was obvious. They were equals, real partners.
