When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 112

“These are expensive candies. The ingredients are actually really healthy. It’s fine to let her have some once in a while. You don’t need to stress out so much. You’re always putting Carrie under so much pressure—”

Before Sheila could finish, Brody walked over, and Nelly immediately turned on him.

“Brody, are you seriously not aware of your daughter’s teeth problems? You leave her with Sheila just so she can stuff her with junk food all day?”

Nelly reached out, trying to snatch the lollipop from Carrie’s hand. She’d always thought Sheila loved Brody so much that she naturally cared for Carrie too. How else could Sheila have won Carrie over so completely, to the point where Carrie barely wanted her own mother anymore? But now she finally figured it out. The woman Carrie and Brody trusted most didn’t even care about Carrie’s health.

Carrie noticed people staring and her cheeks turned bright red. She shrank back, embarrassed. All the kids knew she was the little princess, always spoiled and indulged. But now… this was mortifying.

“No... I want candy!” Carrie dug her heels in, refusing to give up the lollipop. Nelly kept pulling at her, but Sheila quickly stepped between them.

“It’s my fault. I won’t let her eat those candies any more, okay? Please… don’t be so rough with her.”

Just as Nelly was about to argue with Sheila, Brody stepped in. “I’ll take care of Carrie. Didn’t you say you didn’t want her anymore? Why are you making a big deal out of this?”

His words left both Nelly and Carrie stunned. Nelly realized she’d let her emotions get the best of her, but Carrie seemed shocked. She dropped the lollipop and bolted.

The kindergarten was right across from a busy street. The light was red, and cars were everywhere.

Nelly’s heart nearly stopped. She ran after Carrie as fast as she could. Just as she feared, Carrie darted into the middle of the road and froze, terrified, surrounded by fast-moving cars.

A sports car sped toward her, a huge truck heading from the opposite direction. Carrie was right between them. If either driver tried to dodge, they’d crash.

“Carrie!”

Nelly’s mind went blank. She sprinted for her daughter, reckless with fear.

Sheila started to run too, but she hesitated. Brody was already gone from her side, racing forward.

Tires screeched. Drivers shouted and cursed. Both vehicles swerved wildly, barely missing each other.
