When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 106

“You know me?” Rudy looked genuinely surprised, caught off guard by Nelly’s directness.

He really hadn’t expected her to seek him out on purpose. He’d done his research on her. She was Christopher’s illegitimate daughter, abandoned when she was little and raised on charity. Her grades, her resume, everything about her had always been average at best. For someone like her, just being a part of the Watson family was already a stroke of luck. How could she possibly have what it takes to inherit billions, let alone think she deserved a seat at the table with people like him and compete in business?

So Rudy had never bothered to take her seriously. But now, hearing her speak, he realized maybe he’d been too quick to judge.

“I didn’t before, but I do now,” Nelly replied, her smile bright but her words sharp. “You really are exactly what people say about you. One look and it’s obvious you’re trouble.”

Rudy chuckled. “Nelly, don’t get ahead of yourself just because you’re Christopher’s daughter. Christopher’s dead. Even if he weren’t, in the Watson family, you’re still a nobody.”

“That may be,” Nelly said, meeting his gaze. “But even a nobody like me still outranks you in the Watson family.” She knew exactly what would sting and didn’t hesitate to say it.

Rudy’s laugh died on his lips. “You’ve only been back with the Watsons for a few days. And you really want to talk about status?”

“Let’s drop that, then. Why don’t we talk about what you pulled at the dinner party? Or maybe we can bring it up with my grandfather and see what he thinks.” Nelly’s smile faded. Suddenly, her expression was all business.

Rudy saw her face turn cold and got a bad feeling. He tried to walk away, but five huge men seemed to materialize behind him, blocking his path.

“Nelly, what are you doing?” Panic started to creep into his voice as realization hit. Jonah’s attack yesterday must’ve been Nelly’s idea, too.

“I don’t know,” Nelly said lightly, weaving around her bodyguards as she headed out. “Maybe I’m just in a bad mood.”

“Nelly… if you do this, the Chandler family won’t let it slide. Your grandfather won’t either…” Rudy’s voice trembled. He was still recovering from his last beating. Was she really about to have him roughed up again?

He didn’t even finish his sentence before a fist connected with his side.

Nelly stood off to the side, checking the time on her phone. After about ten minutes, she made her way back to her car. She wasn’t expecting to run right into Nancy.

Nancy had been waiting nearby, feeling uneasy and restless. After a while, she decided to go check things out. When she saw Nelly coming out alone, she instantly knew something was wrong and hurried over.

“Ms. Watson,” Nelly said, stepping in front of her.

Nancy was every inch the international supermodel, with a body that turned heads and a height that towered over Nelly. In the sunlight, she really was a sight to behold. But Nancy just rolled her eyes at Nelly’s greeting and tried to slip past.
