“What happened? Is Jonah hurt?”
Nelly’s heart squeezed tight. She could already sense this had something to do with her.
“He broke the rules. He brought this on himself,” Felix replied, his voice cold and sharp with anger.
After Nelly left last night, Jonah had gone straight to the Chandler estate. Felix had only meant for him to deliver a warning, but Jonah went looking for Rudy and ended up starting a fight. Felix didn’t know the details, but the whole mess had already reached Michael. Now Rudy was in the hospital with serious injuries, and everything was spiraling out of control.
“He did it for me...” Nelly’s guilt flooded over her. If she’d known Jonah would be even more impulsive than she was, she never would have said so much last night.
“It doesn’t matter anymore,” Felix said, his tone hard. “This doesn’t concern you. If Michael asks, just make sure you keep your name out of it.” His eyes pinned Nelly, as if daring her to cause more trouble.
“What’s going to happen to Jonah?” Nelly’s mind was spinning. All she could picture was Jonah kneeling in the hall, still injured.
“If the Chandlers want payback, Jonah’s going to have a rough time,” Felix said, his face unreadable.
Nelly started to leave, but Felix’s voice cut through the air.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“He’s hurt. He should at least get his wounds treated.”
“He broke the family rules. He’s being punished. You both need to wake up. Do you really think there are no consequences in this house?”
“Jonah wouldn’t just start a fight for no reason. I’ll go talk to Michael and explain the situation. That should clear things up, right?”
“Nelly, are you here to inherit the family legacy, or just to make yourself the Watson family’s punchline?” Felix slammed his hand on the table. This time, he didn’t bother to hide his frustration.
Nelly had barely been back in the family, and already she was at odds with Britney and the Chandlers, dragging every dirty secret out into the open. Even Michael would probably just blame everyone equally. Besides, Jonah was a stepson. Even if Nelly begged for him, it wouldn’t change his fate.
Nelly’s anger boiled over. “You’re all the same. Christopher was cold, but you’re even worse! Jonah has always worked for you. Even if he made a mistake, you can’t just use family rules to punish him.”
She didn’t wait for Felix to answer. She hurried back to Jonah, kneeling beside him and trying to pull him up.
“Come on, get up. Let’s get those wounds looked at.”
But Jonah didn’t move. He glanced at Nelly, his lips split and bloody. “You should go. This isn’t your problem.”
“You did this for me. How is it not my problem?” Nelly tried to pull him up, but he wouldn’t budge. Frustrated, she dropped to her knees beside him.
“Fine. If you won’t get up, I’ll kneel with you.”
