“Because…” Sheila walked over to Brody and spoke slowly, making each word count. “I won't have any more kids.”
…
That evening, Nelly hurried to the Watson estate.
Felix was in his study, deep in conversation with Jonah. He looked up, clearly surprised to see her.
“It’s late. What brings you here?”
Nelly didn’t look good. She was holding the Watson family register Felix had given her not long ago. She set it down on the desk and finally spoke. “You know who did it, don’t you?”
Felix glanced at Jonah. Jonah nodded and left the room, but not before shooting Nelly a worried look, like he wanted to say something but just couldn’t.
Gina hadn’t found any clues about who drugged Nelly last night. Even the security footage from the incident had disappeared without a trace. For someone to pull off something like that, especially at an event where Nelly’s identity had just been made public, it could only mean one thing. The Watson family had to be involved.
Nelly's first guess, of course, was someone from inside the family. So as soon as she started feeling better, tracking them down became her top priority. She’d only just come back to the Watson family. If she let someone pull something like this on her without fighting back, it would only keep happening.
She thought Felix would be furious, ready to team up with her and find out who was behind it. Instead, he reacted with a calm she didn’t expect. He even told her not to make waves and said he’d handle it.
Nelly could see he was just trying to brush her off. Felix always claimed he didn’t get along with the rest of the family. This was the perfect chance for him to fight back. Why wasn’t he angry?
“Didn’t I say I’d take care of it? Don’t worry. I’ll make sure someone protects you now. Nothing like this will happen again.”
Felix rolled his chair over to the window. With his back to the fading light, his face was hard to read, shadowed and distant.
“You know this person well, don’t you?” Nelly didn’t bother with small talk. “I went through the Watson family register. There’s a page missing. Your daughter’s.”
Felix’s eyes snapped to Nelly.
“And the way this was done… it was rash, messy. It feels like someone acting on impulse.”
Nelly watched Felix’s hand tighten on the armrest of his wheelchair.
After a long silence, Felix finally smiled, but there wasn’t much warmth in it. “You’re sharp. That’s good, but you’re a bit reckless.”
“If my daughter really wanted to hurt you, and you came to me for answers. Don’t you think I’d just protect her?”
Nelly said, her voice cool. “But we’re in this together now. Even if we end up going our separate ways, I want to know what happened.”
Felix held her gaze. She didn’t flinch or back down, her eyes steady and cold, just like Christopher’s had been. He’d always done whatever he wanted, even if it meant the whole family would turn against him.
