The man shook his head. “I don’t remember.”
Madeline felt a pang of disappointment. She glanced at Julian, then looked back at the man standing in front of her.
“Hey, give me a name, will you? From now on, I’m sticking with you,” he said.
Madeline blinked, a little thrown off. “You’re going to follow me?”
He nodded. “Right now, the only thing I can remember is that I need to find you and protect you. If I’m not with you, I’ve got nowhere else to go. So… can you take me in?”
“Um…”
“Does it bother you if I tag along? Can you give me a name now?” he pressed.
Madeline blinked at him. “What do you want to be called?”
“I don’t care. It’s up to you. Your last name is Monroe, right? I’ll take Monroe too.”
Madeline shook her head. “No, that’s not really my family name. I’m not actually related to the Monroes. If I wasn’t so used to it, I’d probably change it.”
She thought for a moment. “Let’s go with Luke Ballard. It can be your temporary name, and if you ever remember your real one, you can change it back.”
“Luke. I like it.” He smiled wide, clearly pleased. Moving closer to Madeline, he added, “From now on, I’ll do whatever you say.”
Julian saw how close Luke got to Madeline and immediately pulled her a little closer to his side. “It’s freezing. Let’s get in the car.”
Madeline hesitated. “What about him?”
“You really want to bring him along?”
She studied Luke. There was something open and honest in his eyes. He’d said he had nowhere else to go, that he didn’t remember anything except his mission to find and protect her. Maybe he even held some clues about what was really going on. Madeline knew she couldn’t just leave him.
“Yeah, I do.”
Julian looked at Luke, then back at Madeline. He realized she’d made up her mind, so he didn’t argue. “Fine. Whatever you want.”
Julian opened the car door for her. Madeline looked over at Luke. “Come on, Luke. Get in.”
“Sure thing.”
As soon as Madeline got in, Luke zipped in after her, sliding right into the seat next to hers.
He moved so fast it made Madeline jump.
Julian saw his spot had been taken and his expression turned ice cold. “Move.”
Luke glanced at him, then looked away, completely unfazed. “No. I’m here to protect Madeline, so I need to sit with her. You are only her ex-husband. Why are trying to sit so close anyway?”
Madeline stared at him. “How did you know he’s my ex-husband?”
Luke shrugged. “I did a little research before I came, just to be sure I found the right person this time. Don’t worry, it was just to check your identity and figure out who’s around you.”
He met her eyes. “So yeah, I know he’s your ex, and I know he hurt you. Sister, guys like that don’t deserve to be around you.”
