The next morning.
Danielle drove herself to work in a brand new car.
Gian and Kirsten both witnessed her arrival.
“Alexander’s compensation?” Gian asked, nodding at the car.
Danielle gave a small nod.
Kirsten squinted, giving the car an appraising look up and down before wrinkling her nose. “That’s what you picked? You should’ve gone for something worth a few hundred grand at least.”
Only a fool turns down a freebie.
Danielle couldn’t help but laugh. “There’s really no need. Besides, I don’t want to owe him anything.”
She hated accepting handouts, especially from Alexander.
By now, they were even. No more debts between them.
Gian crossed his arms, staring at the car as he mulled things over.
He raised his brows and shot Danielle a look. “You know, something feels off about this. The way he is, shouldn’t he have made you pay for the damages?”
It was a fair point.
But this time, the situation was different.
Danielle shut the car door and spoke calmly. “He gave me the car to show off their little ‘bromance.’”
Kirsten gave a derisive snort. “So you’re just a prop in their game?”
“Jerk. Married you all these years and never got you any jewelry or designer bags. Meanwhile, Millie’s got every expensive watch and limited-edition purse under the sun—never the same one twice.”
“I don’t buy that the Fletcher family business is raking in that much cash.”
Kirsten’s curiosity was piqued. She herself was always carrying some exclusive bag. “With that huge loss AetherX Dynamics took when they messed up Mr. Linden’s account, did she even manage to fix it? Or did Alexander bail her out, too?”
Danielle shrugged. “Haven’t heard anything.”
And honestly, she didn’t care.
They started heading upstairs together.
As they climbed, Gian mused, “Probably still not resolved.”
A lot had happened lately, and Millie was busy playing nurse for Alexander at the hospital.
