Chapter 249
LYRIC
My body quaked from head to toe. He obviously had the guards bring me here. Then, he must’ve known I was a man disguised as a woman. But how was that possible? The only people that knew about my disguise were Jace and Bianca. Did one of them sell me out?
“Leave us.” His voice sent a chill down my spine.
I took long deep breaths, not because of the hooded blindfold over my head, but because I was running out of air due to how anxious I was.
I heard retreating footsteps and figured I was the only one left in the room with him.
Silence filled the air, broken only by my ragged breathing. Then, I heard relaxed footsteps–the one I very much recognized from him.
The footsteps stopped in front of me, and next, my blindfold went off.
I gasped, falling back on my heels as a rush If air hit my face. Slowly, my eyes dragged from his boots to his face.
His face:

Jaris was here. In front of me.
Despite how cold he looked, I didn’t miss the glint of amusement in his eyes. Like a hunter that had caught an interesting game.
“A man,” his eyes stayed on me.
I didn’t dare try to defend myself. Because at that moment, I knew he knew. He might hate me right now, but I was sure him of people wouldn’t fall to recognize my face even in disguise.
I held my breath when his hand came to my moustache. My eyes felt close, just as he ripped it off.
My beard went next, ripped off in one effortless tug that made my skin sting.
I heard him walk away. He didn’t even take my hoodie off ‘cause it wasn’t important. It was already obvious to him.
“Lyric Harper,” he sat on his throne. We were in the conference room, alone. “In the Capital. You’ve been trespassing on restricted property.”
I lowered my eyes to the floor, thinking of the thousand and one ways I was going to die.
“What were you doing at the park?”
Silence, still. I didn’t know how to lie to him.
“You’ve been hovering around my kids for a long time. This isn’t the first time you’re stalking them.”
“I–I wasn’t stalking them.”
Oh, gods. Somebody definitely ratted me out. Jaris hated me too much to be reasoned with. How do I get myself out of this situation?
“So, why have you been stalking them? And who has been keeping you informed?”
He didn’t know who my informant was. That means Jace wasn’t the one who betrayed me. If it was Bianca, she’d have also told him it was Jace. How else did Jaris get to know of this?
I flinched when he rose abruptly from his seat and stormed towards me with so much rage like he was going to hit me. I practically recetted

“If I were you, Lyric, I’d start talking, because right now, I have every right to hang you on a pole.” The atmosphere felt humid and sizzling as he came to a stop before me.
I closed my eyes, wishing I wasn’t witnessing this side of Jaris.
“Please… I just wanted to see them.”
He cocked his head to the side, no doubt finding me ridiculous. “And what business do you have with my kids?”
“Nothing, I promise. I just… I just wanted to see them.”
I sounded stupid. I should’ve listened to Jace and avoided the Capital.
Seconds turned into minutes. My fear amplified with every heartbeat. Jaris stood in front of me, appearing like my master while I remained on my knees.
“I can see you have no plans of talking.” He turned away, walking toward his seat. “Perhaps, if you had some time to cool off in a cell, you’ll feel much better.”
No. Oh, no! Caden might hear of this and decide to come over. I’d be dead!
I dragged my eyes to meet his. “Please… I didn’t mean to be here. I swear, you’ll never see me again if you let me go.”
But he stared back at me with cold unfeeling eyes, making me feel like my words only bounced off on rocks.
He made a very brief call with his phone and afterward, two guards entered.
“Take her to her cell and make sure she remains bound.”
The guards did not hesitate.
I didn’t know which was worse–the pain from my limbs from being bound for too long or the fact that Caden was probably plotting to kill me.
No doubt, news about my capture would’ve gone round the Capital, and if Caden had secret ears here, I was damn sure he must’ve heard already.
It took forever before I got company in my lonely cell. Three guards showed up and pulled me out, holding me like they would a slave.
I was taken back to the conference room where I found Jaris waiting.
He was wearing something new. The only thing that looked the same was the cold attachment in his eyes.
My eyes darted to the window while he dismissed the guards. It was getting dark. I needed to leave.
-dragged my eyes back to him, wanting to say something, but the fascination I saw in his eyes stopped me. He was standing with his hands behind his back, his eyes peering into the side of my face where Caden’s mark burnt. My stomach churned just before my gaze dropped shamelessly to the floor.
To make it worse, he walked further towards me. I was tempted to take a step back.
“You bumped into something, huh?” His voice was quiet, somewhat laced with amusement. “You and your partner don’t seem to be on good terms.
I knew he was there when I had told Mr. Ming I sustained my injury by accident. I was mad at him because he was the reason Caden hurt me that night That was why I didn’t look.
“Please let me go,” I whimpered.
This was a battle was never going to win.
He lingered a little longer in front of me, his gaze filling me with too much share.

I sighed in relief when he turned away.
“My son believes we’ve shared moments I don’t seem to remember.”
My heart skipped a beat. Xylon?
“He has this sketchbook that contains images of us doing…” he frowned, not seeming to find the right words. “Impossible things.”
