Chapter 261
JARIS
“She’s better than she was a month ago. So, with more care, she’ll get better,” Doctor Meredith finished her analysis of Greta.
Looking through the window, I watched Greta’s sleeping form on the bed. She looked so peaceful in her sleep. I wish she were just the same whenever she was awake.
“Thank you, Meredith. Don’t forget to keep me posted. All the time.”
“Definitely, your Highness.”
I left the ward to join Lyric in the car.
“How’s she?”
“Getting better, I hope.”
I started the car. Lyric’s hand was on mine before I could move the wheel.
“She’ll be fine, Jaris. The most important thing is that we saved her. We’ll get her the prosthetic hands when she’s fit to use them. We’ll make sure she’s properly cared for… She’ll get better.”
I took a deep breath, my head falling back to the seat.
Honestly, I didn’t know how to feel better. Greta was too messed up in the head. Her sanity had been completely crushed by the cruelty she suffered for eight years. I knew they didn’t want to say it, but it’d take years for her to get better.
I didn’t feel connected to her, not when I was mated to Lyric. But man, I did feel terrible. Sne was a sweet, bright girl who wanted a normal life until she got sucked into my family’s madness. She’d never used her siphoning powers on anyone until she met me and gave me her blood to help defeat Caden.
She wanted the best for me. But in the end, Caden got the chance to ruin her.
“She’ll be fine,” Lyric’s voice came again, reassuringly.
A few minutes into the drive, I felt a little better. But that was until Lyric brought up an unsettling topic.
“I think you should give them a chance.”
“No. They don’t deserve it.”
I didn’t need to ask who she was referring to. It were the bastards that’d been sending endless letters and emails to me, begging for a meeting.
The Dregs. They even named themselves. Fucking hilarious.
“Jaris, please. I’ve seen what Caden does to people. That guy was a full–time manipulator. He orchestrated the whole thing, turned everyone against themselves, and picked a side to fool the most. The Dregs saw him as someone offering help to them when they were at a losing war.” She sighed. “Like me, they’re just victims of his manipulations.”
I snorted and looked out the window.
“Why don’t we talk about something else? I believe we have interesting topics.”
She rolled her eyes, clearly upset I was deviating from the topic.
Not like I cared. “Let’s start with the vacation. Do you think the kids are still interested?”

“Of course, they are.” Another eye roll. “Xyla has been rechecking her bags since yesterday.”
Hm. “I can imagine.”
First thing in the morning, the four of us would be leaving for Greece. It’d be our first vacation as a family.
It’s supposed to be for two weeks, but honestly, we might end up staying a month. This past year has been a lot–too many tumbles, heartaches, devastating discoveries.
I wanted to be away from everything and just focus on my family, for a month at least.
“So, have you changed your mind? Will you be attending the party?” She asked a while later.
It was a random Alpha’s birthday party. Lately, I’ve been too uninterested in social activities.
“Don’t think so.”
She gasped, like it was a betrayal or something. “Come on! We’ve talked about this!”
“We have an early morning flight, Lyric.”
“I know. We’ll be back from the party before midnight. It doesn’t change anything.”
“It does for me. I’m not going.”
She folded her arms. “I guess I’ll just go alone, then. I’ll convince Bianca to accompany me.”
I tore my eyes from the road to her face. “You’re going when I’m not?”
She blinked at me, appearing genuinely clueless. “Why not? It’s your choice if you don’t want to go. I don’t see why it should affect me.”
“Funny, You were just crowned Grand Luna, Lyric. It is inappropriate to attend social gatherings without me.”
“Please! Stop making up rules. You and I know it doesn’t exist anywhere,”
“Well, it does, and I’m telling you, you’re not leaving without me.”
And I meant it. So, by evening, I followed her to the damn party.
It was infuriating how easily she got me to change my mind on things. I was rapidly beginning to understand the things about her that I fell in love with.
Lyric wasn’t just beautiful–she was perfect. She had the softest heart with the prettiest eyes and brightest smile. The way she interacted with my kids- with our kids–it filled me with the painful realization that they’ve never had a mother.
For the first time in my life, I felt complete. I felt like a man who owned the world. I may not remember all of our happy memories yet, but I was ready to
make new ones with her.
In another life, even if Lyric and I get to meet as strangers, we’d definitely fall in love again.
LYRIC
The party was beyond fun. Although, it was mostly because I was next to Jaris.
I caught sight of Jace and Kael in the corner, having their own fun. The asshole. I couldn’t believe he didn’t have my time again ‘cause he was back with his boyfriend.
I laughed at the thought. Who would’ve thought that Jace, my flirty straight friend, would ever be humbled by the arrogant Beta? I could still remember

how he was in self-denial when he realized he was starting to feel things for Kael.
I clicked my tongue.
In another corner, Nerion stood like a statue, completely unmoved by the fun around him. My smile faded.
Nerion was a great guy who deserved happiness. I wish things had ended differently between him and Maddy.
Beside him was Bianca who was quietly drinking from her glass. She seemed to be interested in the party, but I noticed her stealing glances at Nerion from time to time. Unfortunately, though, I wasn’t sure the grumpy man noticed.
Poor Bianca.
Jaris pulled me away from the party when he was bored enough. We went over to the rooftop where we stared into the night sky above…
“Nice party, huh?” I teased him, my arms around his waist and my head on his chest.
“You wish. We’re leaving in ten minutes.”
I gasped. “Jaris-”
“No point arguing. I’m exhausted.”
I rolled my eyes and gave up, returning my head to his chest. Gods, it felt so peaceful here. For the first time in my life, I felt complete.
Seconds turned into minutes. I stayed with my eyes closed while listening to the rhythm of Jaris‘ heart. He had his arms around me, keeping me in and stroking my hair.
I stiffened when his fingers traced the scar along my hairline, the one left by Caden’s feral beast. It was the one reminder of the things I survived.
“I’ll get rid of it,” I murmured. I was still looking for a way around it.
“I don’t care. It’s got nothing on your face.”
I giggled like a child. He wasn’t entirely wrong, though. The scar wasn’t too obvious on my face since it was along my edges. But it was there.
“Who do you think scarred you as a child?”
I shrugged. “We never got to know. My father had a lot of enemies then. I won’t be surprised if I were merely a tool for revenge.”
“Hmm.” He breathed on my hair, his fingers threading through.
“Jaris, are you sure you don’t want me to…” I cleared my throat and he laughed.
“When will you ever be bold enough to pronounce my cock, Lyric? You have it all the time.”
“Hey!” I hit him on the chest. Geez! The guy was brazen.
He pulled me back to his chest.
“I’m sure, Lyric. There’s no point treating me. As long as I get full satisfaction from you, I think I’m fine. I don’t want it from anyone else.”
I bit my lips to suppress the smile running up my cheeks. But there was nothing I could do to stop the sweet warmth that unfurled in my chest.
The reason Jaris was able to cum in me was because I was a Siphon. It was also the reason I was able to conceive for him. If he’d slept with Greta years ago, the same thing would’ve happened. Likewise Caden. Thank goodness the monster never got to touch me.
