“Great, I actually wanted to talk to you.”
“Go ahead.” Kenneth lifted his eyes to Norma, frowning as if just getting the words out hurt.
“You’ve heard about Emily’s condition, right?” Norma sat down across from him and slid a stack of medical reports closer. Her voice was rough. “Brain tumor. It’s pressing on her nerves. She can’t take anything to help her memory, and honestly, she’ll most likely end up paralyzed.”
Kenneth’s hand, hanging loosely by his side, curled slowly into a fist at the word “paralyzed.”
“Emily has no idea yet. We’ve decided not to tell her for now. As for the two of you…” Norma paused, letting the silence fill the gap. “You should break up. It’s better for everyone.”
“Break up?”
Kenneth’s head jerked up. He could barely process the words, tension written all over him.
“Emily could become paralyzed, or worse, at any time. There’s no future for you two.” Norma’s voice was cold, every word hitting like a punch. “She’s loved you since she was a kid. She even fought with me to get into the entertainment business just so she could be close to you.”
Kenneth clenched his jaw, darkness clouding his face.
“I’ve watched her struggle loving you for ten years. No one knows better than I do how hard it’s been for her.” Norma’s eyes glistened, her tone turning bitter. “Kenneth, this is where it ends.”
What did she mean by that? Was he never going to see Emily again?
Charlotte and Anthony came in to find Kenneth sitting on the sofa, frozen. His broad shoulders looked small, his face shadowed by grief.
The once golden boy looked broken, like the weight of the world had crushed him.
“We really appreciate how you’ve taken care of Emily,” Norma added. When she saw he was just sitting there, head bowed, not even moving, her disappointment was obvious as she turned her gaze upstairs to where Emily was huddled in the corner.
Emily stood there silently, her hands clenched tight, sadness buried deep in her eyes.
