At the Blair Estate, the screech of brakes cut through the air, sending a flock of birds into flight.
Kenneth didn’t even wait for the car to stop. He flung the door open and rushed over to Charlotte in a panic, his steps unsteady.
“What happened?” His hands landed on her shoulders, desperate for answers. Kenneth’s face was drained of color and his eyes were rimmed red. His voice sounded hollow. “Did something come up in the tests? Wasn’t everything fine before?”
Charlotte hesitated. She took a breath, her voice dropping almost to a whisper. “The blood work just came back. Emily… She could lose the ability to walk. It could happen at any time.”
Paralyzed?
The word hit Kenneth like a punch to the gut. He felt the ache deep in his bones.
Emily was in her twenties. She loved to dance, to act. If she had to be stuck in bed…
The thought was unbearable. He couldn’t picture what it would do to her.
“Try to stay calm,” Anthony said, stepping forward. He gently pulled Charlotte into his arms and gave her belly a reassuring pat before turning to Kenneth. “Emily has a brain tumor. The chances she’ll be paralyzed are about ninety percent. She still hasn’t gotten her memory back. If you walk away now, it won’t really affect her or you.”
Kenneth looked up slowly, his throat tight. “Anthony, what are you saying?”
“If even Lottie can’t do anything about it, you know how bad it is.” Anthony watched Kenneth, his dark eyes narrowed and steady. He spoke with quiet weight. “If you choose to stay with Emily, you have to accept everything that comes with it. Maybe it’ll be ten days. Maybe a few weeks, maybe years. And if things get worse… Emily might be gone with barely a warning.”
Kenneth listened in silence. His face had gone ashen.
“You know what I mean.” Anthony paused for a few seconds and added, “But don’t worry. The Blair family will take care of her.”
Nobody spoke. The silence stretched out, heavy and uneasy.
After a long moment, Kenneth lifted his head like he’d made up his mind. He took the folder from Knox and headed to the main hall without saying a word.
