“So, it’s you.”
Adela froze for a moment, stunned, then a mocking smile curled on her lips as she stared at Charlotte. The pieces were coming together. Charlotte was Kenneth’s sister, and Kenneth and Emily had always been… complicated. Now everything made sense.
“No wonder you handed the rights to Emily, no questions asked, and poured money into her film,” Adela scoffed, her voice trembling with anger. “You didn’t even blink when you helped destroy my father’s career. You ruined me, too!”
Her pretty face was twisted with hate. The gun in her shaking hand pressed harder against Emily’s temple, one wrong move away from disaster.
Charlotte kept her expression calm. Her lips tightened and her eyes turned cold. “Tell me what you want.”
Emily struggled in Adela’s grip, her breath catching as the chokehold grew tighter. Blue veins bulged at her temples, her face smeared with blood from split lips and scratches. She looked seconds from breaking.
Kenneth didn’t move. He just stared at Emily, voice steady. “Let her go. Whatever you want, it’s yours. Money? Power? Say it.”
Adela scanned the faces in the room. Nervous, she clung to the gun, her mouth twisting into a sneer. “I want my dad back from the dead. Can you do that?”
Charlotte’s gaze didn’t waver. “Your father abused his position, took what wasn’t his, and hurt people. He couldn’t live with what he’d done, so he made his choice. From start to finish, this was all on him.”
She slouched, her eyes half-closed. While everyone else was frozen with fear, Charlotte looked almost bored, calm in the middle of chaos.
“You liar!” Adela’s hands trembled violently, her scream raw. “If it wasn’t for you, nobody would have investigated him! You’re the reason he’s dead! You did this to me!”
Charlotte let out a cold laugh.
