When Emily woke up the next day and saw all the reactions blowing up on Twitter, she was definitely going to be over the moon.
The sky was just starting to lighten. The thick, heavy darkness faded away as sunlight slowly crept into the room. Golden rays slipped through the sheer curtains, pouring across the huge pink and white bed.
Maybe it was the sunlight streaming in that woke her. Emily shifted restlessly, blinking herself awake, and that was all it took to disturb Kenneth, who had been dozing at the bedside.
“Emily,” he said as soon as he saw her eyes open. He jumped up, leaned in, and his voice was soft but worried. “Are you hungry? Thirsty? Does anywhere hurt? Do you feel okay?”
He’d seen her use Lottie’s medicine last night and her injuries didn’t look nearly as bad now, but Emily just felt foggy and irritable. All his questions made her frown, annoyed.
“What’s wrong?” Kenneth asked when she didn’t reply, just stared at him. He grew more anxious by the second. “Seriously, Emily, do you not feel well?”
She was looking at him differently now.
“Stay here. Don’t move. I’ll go get Charlotte,” Kenneth said, his voice tight. He looked at her for another moment, swallowed nervously, and turned to leave.
Just then, he heard her voice—faint and a little hoarse behind him. “Who are you?”
Kenneth stopped in his tracks. He whipped around, staring at her in disbelief. “What?”
“I don’t think I know you,” Emily said, pushing off the covers. She steadied herself against the headboard, her big round eyes darting around the unfamiliar room before finally settling on his face. She sounded completely lost. “Where am I?”
“Emily?” Kenneth’s heart started pounding. He rushed back to her side, his mouth suddenly dry. “Don’t scare me like that. This isn’t funny.”
He reached for her hand without thinking.
She jerked away instantly, fear flashing across her still-swollen face. She kept backing up, shrinking into the bed. “Who are you?”
“Emily, it’s me,” Kenneth’s voice broke as his eyes went glassy. “Kenneth.”
She stared. The name meant nothing to her.
