The call connected and Charlotte sounded genuinely pleased, her lips pulling into a playful smile. “I’ve got a dress right here.”
“What brand?” Kenneth asked, gripping his phone a little too tightly. Nervous sweat gathered in his palm, but he tried to sound casual. “This event is a big deal. The dress can’t be cheap.”
The other end went dead quiet for a few heartbeats.
Charlotte’s voice finally floated back, laced with sarcasm and cool detachment. “Since when do I keep any garbage lying around?”
Honestly, it was true. Charlotte didn’t own anything remotely low-end.
“The dress is already on its way to Emily,” Charlotte went on, lounging back against her sofa. Her delicate eyebrows relaxed as a hint of a smile tugged at her lips. “Kenneth, you really do go the extra mile for Emily, don’t you?”
Kenneth immediately felt a little guilty. Back when Anthony and Lottie first got together, he’d teased Anthony about dating someone so much younger. Now that he was in a similar position, he couldn’t help but feel sheepish.
“We’re friends. I’m just helping out, that’s all.”
“Friends?” Charlotte repeated, her amused smile spreading even wider. She teased, “I thought you said Emily was like a little sister to you.”
Kenneth was totally thrown off by that. It took him a while to find his words. “Hey, I’m not in the habit of collecting little sisters, alright?”
Charlotte laughed softly and shifted, getting more comfortable. “Well, rumor has it there’s an actor in the cast who’s really into Emily. Since you’re her friend, maybe keep an eye on her so she doesn’t get hurt. Or who knows, maybe you could even play cupid if you think he’s a good guy.” She could tell Kenneth was flustered—his breathing gave him away. Her grin turned downright mischievous. “She’s at a perfect age to start a romance, don’t you think?”
“Alright, that’s enough.” Kenneth cut her off, clearly not wanting to hear any more. “Just focus on taking care of your baby and quit meddling. I’m hanging up now.”
