Inside the car, Emily and Jarrod scrolled through the schedule for the gala, checking every detail.
This was the big event of the year, a star-studded celebration of TV and film. Only the hottest names had invitations. Because their last show as on-screen siblings had been such a hit, the organizers and their team had arranged for them to walk the red carpet together. It was pretty obvious they were looking to stir up gossip and grab some headlines.
“I can’t wait to walk the red carpet with you,” Jarrod said, flashing his perfect smile. He reached for a shawl nearby, about to put it on Emily’s shoulders.
“Thanks, but I’ve got it.” Emily took the shawl herself, her tone polite but distant. “Let our managers handle the rest.”
“You must be exhausted from filming all day. Try to get some rest tonight.” Jarrod knew when to step back. As he climbed out of the car, he kept his smile soft and said quietly, “Emily…”
“Yeah?” Emily barely lifted her eyes, but when she did, they were clear and expectant.
“Just keep moving forward.” Jarrod’s gaze was steady, almost gentle. “You’re amazing, Emily. You deserve someone even better.”
Emily froze for a second, lips trembling while she tried to find her words. “What do you mean?”
Jarrod moved a little closer, leaning in like he was sharing a secret, his voice playful. “There are so many people out there who like you. So many who would treat you right.”
She watched as Jarrod walked away, his last words echoing in her mind and sending a small ache through her chest.
