Thinking back to the way Emily looked at Kenneth in the lobby, Jarrod felt a strange heaviness settle in his chest. But he shook it off. He and Emily had grown up together, worked side by side for years. If anything was ever going to happen between them, it would've by now. As long as Emily was still single, though, there was hope for him.

Meanwhile, not too far away, Kenneth lounged in the back seat of his car, slouched low with a cigarette between his fingers. His eyes were fixed on Emily and Jarrod, shadows lingering in his gaze. His jaw was tense, cheeks flushed and eyes rimmed with red, looking like he was one wrong move away from picking a fight.

Up in the front seat, his agent rubbed at his nose, feeling awkward. This was not how today was supposed to go. Why did Kenneth look so much like a jealous boyfriend right now?

Kenneth’s eyes finally relaxed only when Emily got into her car and drove away. He turned and caught his agent staring. His brows pulled together.

“What are you staring at?” Kenneth muttered.

“Ken, you didn’t… Did you already know Emily would be here and just happen to show up too?” The agent’s voice was full of suspicion.

Panic flashed across Kenneth’s face before he could cover it up. He took a shaky drag, filled the car with smoke, and muttered, “What, she can come here, but I can’t?”

“It’s not that,” the agent said, fighting a grin. He stretched his neck, grabbed his phone, clicked on the camera, and lined up a shot of Kenneth. “But you look like you’re about to start a fight. Hard not to think you’re jealous.”

“Kenneth,” the agent said suddenly, his voice turning serious. “You aren’t starting to like Emily, are you?”

“She’s just my friend!” Kenneth’s heart hammered in his chest, and he spat out the denial the second the words were out of the agent’s mouth. But his eyes darted everywhere, and he was clearly freaking out.
