Why did Kenneth keep pressing about Emily’s so-called boyfriend? Was he jealous? Or just checking in as a friend? Pam remembered Emily’s constant reminders. Don’t say a word. Don’t mess anything up. She had to play it cool.
If Kenneth really liked Emily, maybe a little nudge would help. But what if he was just making conversation? If she spoke up and ruined their friendship, she’d never forgive herself. Some things, once said, changed everything. She knew Emily. If Kenneth turned her down, she’d probably disappear from showbiz just to avoid facing him.
“Just asking,” Kenneth replied. He noticed Pam’s suspicious look and awkwardly shifted his arm, trying to act laid-back. “She’s not the sharpest. If someone tried to sell her, she probably wouldn’t even notice.”
Pam just stared, speechless.
“If you need anything, let me know.” Kenneth’s eyes lingered on Emily’s sleeping face, a soft smile pulling at his lips. “I’m kind of like her big brother, after all.”
Big brother? The words hit Pam hard. All the things she’d almost said just dried up on her tongue. So that was it. Just the brother type. Maybe she’d imagined that Kenneth liked Emily. Thank goodness she didn’t say anything. That would have been a disaster.
“Thanks, Kenneth.” Pam answered, trying to smile, but it came out a little sad. Honestly, the two of them looked good together. Too bad that’s all it would ever be. Right people, wrong time.
After leaving Emily’s place, Kenneth headed back to his car. He let himself sink into the seat, tossed an arm over his forehead, and closed his eyes. Emily’s tears kept replaying in his mind. The way she sobbed for another man made his chest twist painfully.
Why did it feel like something precious had just been taken from him?
His phone’s ringtone jolted him from his thoughts. He glanced at the screen and let a crooked smile tug at his lips as he picked up. “Finally decided to call me back?”
