“Just wait till you wake up. I’ll make sure you answer for this.” Kenneth’s voice was low as he brushed a loose strand of hair from Emily’s forehead and tucked it behind her ear. He took in her peaceful face and swallowed, surprised by the warmth he felt. How had he never realized how cute Emily could be?

About thirty minutes later, Pam pushed open the break room door and staggered in, catching her breath.
“Kenneth, Emily—”
She stopped short. Her knees went weak and she almost sank to the floor.
Emily was drunk out of her mind, wrapped around Kenneth’s waist like a clingy little octopus.
Kenneth held her gently, one arm steadying her waist, the other soothing her shoulder, and there was something so tender in the way he looked down at her. If Pam didn’t know any better, she’d think she’d walked in on a lovesick couple instead of her two friends.
Pam’s heart skipped a beat. Was she seeing things or was there really something strange in the way Kenneth was looking at Emily? Was it possible… Could he actually like her too?
Before Pam could say anything, Kenneth glanced up and shot her a look that instantly shut her up.
“I finally got her to settle down.” His voice was soft, but there was no mistaking the warning in his eyes.
“Kenneth…” Pam shrank back a little. She felt guilty. “Is Emily okay?”
“What do you think?” Kenneth flexed his hand, working out the pins and needles, then said, “Next time, she’s not drinking. At all.”
“Okay,” Pam mumbled, not daring to argue. “I’ll make sure next time. It won’t happen again.”
“Pam, I can take care of Emily now,” she tried, spotting the messy, makeup-stained shirt Kenneth was wearing. Pam forced an awkward smile. “You’ve done enough for tonight…”
But the moment she reached for Emily, Emily jerked away and clung tighter to Kenneth, refusing to let go. “I don’t want you…”
I want Kenneth to hold me.
