The more Adela dwelled on it, the angrier she got. She slammed the script onto the floor and shot up from her chair, practically burning with rage. “Where’s my dad? I want to see him!”

Adela yanked open the door, about to storm out, but right outside were J and Emily coming out of the meeting room. They were side by side. J’s hands were in her pockets, looking as cool and unbothered as ever. Emily had her arm wrapped around J’s, talking nonstop.

The moment they saw Adela, though, Emily’s smile faded.

“I never thought J could throw three hundred million on the table like it was nothing. No wonder she doesn’t care about the copyright fee,” Adela said, stopping right in their path. Her hands were clenched tight, her lips twisting into an innocent-looking grin. “Makes me wonder how many tickets you’ll have to sell to make that money back.”

Charlotte shifted, her eyes dark and sharp beneath the brim of her hat.

“There’s something else,” Adela said. She ran her fingers through her hair, still smiling sweetly. “Movies have a ton of hoops to jump through. Just because the money’s there doesn’t mean it gets made, and even if it does, it doesn’t guarantee it’ll ever see the light of day.”

“What’s your point?” Emily’s eyes hardened, anger flaring in her chest.

“Oh, nothing,” Adela replied, her grin even brighter. Her gaze was all fake sincerity. “Just don’t make any mistakes, or it could all go to waste.”

Emily almost laughed out loud. Adela was threatening them, plain and simple. Did she really think backing from someone powerful meant she could do whatever she wanted? Threatening Charlotte like this?
