The Mocked Miss’s Hidden Crowns novel Chapter 1388

“Her mom?” Charlotte asked, curling up against Anthony and wrapping her arms around his waist. She listened to the steady beat of his heart.

“Yeah. Emily’s mother is Una.” Anthony’s fingers traced gentle circles on the back of Charlotte’s neck, easing away the tension. “When Una was young, she fell for a man who didn’t love her back. But she just couldn’t let go. She waited for him, year after year. In the end, his family pressured him so much that he had no choice but to marry her.”

Charlotte could already guess where this story was going.

“My family tried to talk her out of it. My grandma nearly cut ties with her over it, but nothing could change Una’s mind.”

The ending was exactly what you’d expect.

She married the man she’d always loved, but after the wedding, especially after Emily was born, he grew cold and distant. He barely spoke to her, shutting her out more and more.

When Emily was six, her father died in an accident.

Una never remarried. Even though her marriage had been empty and miserable, Una stayed alone, locked in the past, still living as if she were mourning him. She just couldn’t move on.

Emily was so much like her mom. It was almost eerie.

Charlotte didn’t say anything for a while. She just nuzzled closer to Anthony, soaking up his warmth. She thought about Emily, always smiling whenever she saw her. Now, it all felt a little bittersweet.

A family full of heartbreak. Loving someone who never loved you back. Smiling for the world, but hiding all your pain when no one was looking.

“When did Emily join the entertainment industry?” Charlotte’s voice was quiet and a little rough, her eyes closed as she spoke.

“When she was sixteen,” Anthony said.

Sixteen. That was six years ago.
