Imperial Heights.
It was almost eleven.
Charlotte stepped out of the bathroom, hair damp and skin warm from the shower. She glanced around the bedroom, but Anthony was nowhere in sight.
Seriously? Did he actually listen and go sleep in the guest room? Since when did he ever do what he was told?
A knock sounded at the door.
“Charlotte?” Helen’s voice came through, gentle and familiar.
“Come in.”
Charlotte dropped onto the sofa, arms crossed and her expression unreadable. She didn’t bother hiding her irritation.
Helen walked in, her eyes immediately softening as she saw Charlotte’s face. “Anthony said you didn’t want to see him,” she said with a little smile. “So he asked me to help dry your hair.”
Charlotte just handed over the towel, lips pressed together, not saying a word.
Helen got to work, fingers gentle and practiced. In ten minutes, Charlotte’s hair was dry and soft.
“You should try to get some sleep, Charlotte.”
Helen tucked the blanket over her and slipped out quietly, leaving the room in silence.
Charlotte lay on her back, staring at the ceiling. The whole evening had been exhausting, and with the pregnancy on top of it, her body felt heavy with fatigue. Even so, her mind wouldn’t let her rest.
Anthony. That jerk.
She tossed and turned, flipping her pillow and the covers, but sleep wouldn’t come.
After half an hour of getting nowhere, she finally threw the blanket aside and slid her bare feet onto the floor. She opened the door, guided by the faint glow from the hallway lights, and padded quietly toward the guest room.
The door was unlocked.
Charlotte hesitated, biting her lip before bending down to peek inside. She felt ridiculous, sneaking around her own house like this. She was the one who told him to sleep somewhere else, and now here she was, looking for him.
