Anthony’s fingers trembled as he looked down at Charlotte. His Adam’s apple bobbed and his eyes were dark with anger.
Becoming the heir meant she had to agree to Allanson’s plan to restart the gene mutation research. There was no way she’d go along with that. What was Charlotte thinking? What kind of risk was she about to take this time?
“In two hours, there’s a family meeting. The new heir will be announced,” Allanson said, like he had already guessed her answer. He watched her closely, his aged eyes steady and unreadable. “Everything you want will be given to you then.”
Charlotte’s lips curled into a half-smile. “If you let me take over the Hawk Family, don’t regret it.”
She didn’t bother looking at Allanson again. “We’re leaving,” she said.
“Slow down.” Anthony stepped up beside her, slipping his hand around her waist and drawing her close.
Nora and Franco shared a glance, then hurried after them.
Allanson watched them go. His eyes lowered, and a faint smile tugged at his lips. It was hard to tell if he was satisfied or just feeling a little lost.
“Allanson.” The butler stepped forward, worry creasing his brow. He spoke quietly, careful to keep his voice even. “Charlotte is hard to control. Even if she agrees to restart the research, she’s bound to cause trouble later. So why are you still making her the Hawk Family’s heir?”
“She’ll do it, and she’ll do it willingly.”
Allanson looked up, his gaze fixed on some distant point outside the window. The sky was heavy with clouds, the air thick with the promise of an oncoming storm.
“Tell everyone. In two hours, all Hawk Family elders need to be at the conference center.” He stood with his hands behind his back, his expression impossible to read. “And tell the press. The whole world is going to watch this meeting live.”
