The document was titled The Hawk Family, Directive Number One. Its main message was clear—Charlotte was being named the next heir of the Hawk Family, and with that came full control over everything on the Isle of Veil.
There were more pages, all outlining the duties and responsibilities she would have to take on. One detail stood out. Gene mutation. So Allanson still hadn’t let go of his obsession with gene mutation research?
“Lottie, we don’t want you to take over the Hawk Family,” Nora said, pushing the document away. Her voice was solid, leaving no room for argument. “Charlotte, you have nothing to do with them. And you’re definitely not selling yourself just for some antidote.”
Charlotte knew what Nora was thinking. Her grandmother had literally given her life to stop gene mutation research from endangering people. How could she even consider agreeing to Allanson’s terms and letting all that start up again?
Anthony had read the document too. For a moment, surprise flickered across his usually composed face. Allanson wanted Lottie to be the next heir? That didn’t add up. He looked at Charlotte, a thousand questions running through his mind.
Restarting gene mutation research was something Lottie would never agree to. Allanson had to know that. So why was he putting on this show?
“Your approval isn’t necessary,” Allanson said. He pushed himself up from his chair with his cane, his movements slow and heavy with age, but his eyes were sharp and locked on Charlotte. “Charlotte, aren’t you even a little tempted?”
“Taking over the Hawk Family, ruling the Isle of Veil, billions in assets, power all over the world… It does sound tempting.” Charlotte raised an eyebrow and let out a small, mocking laugh. “But sorry, I’m just not interested.”
Allanson didn’t look surprised. He almost seemed pleased, like he expected this answer. “You’ll change your mind,” he said, his confidence unwavering.
Charlotte’s eyes narrowed. The tension in the room thickened. She could feel her patience running thin.
