“And it gets worse,” the doctor continued. “The dosage was enough to take down an ox. Your friend has incredible willpower to have held on this long.”
Harvey’s stomach dropped. “With a dose that high, will there be any long-term effects on his body?” He thought about Joseph and Vivica’s plan to conceive a child to save Chaim. Now that Joseph had been poisoned with this stuff, his body would surely need time to recover.
The doctor’s face was serious. “There will likely be some impact. Fortunately, he was brought in promptly, and we were able to treat him quickly. We’ll have to wait for him to wake up to conduct a more thorough examination.”
Harvey listened, then turned to look at his unconscious friend on the hospital bed with a heavy sigh. There was nothing more they could do for now.
When Joseph was moved from the emergency room, Roderic immediately came forward. Harvey relayed the doctor’s words, just as a police officer who had been waiting nearby came over to listen.
Roderic was furious. “Those people are insane! Don’t they care if they kill someone?” he exclaimed. He turned to the officer and immediately pressed the case. “Officer, you heard the doctor. My boss was given a massive dose of drugs. He’s the victim here! That woman is obviously lying. The injuries she sustained were most likely self-inflicted to frame my boss!”
The officer had already spoken with his colleagues back at the station. Combined with the surveillance footage, the truth of the matter was becoming quite clear.
“Don’t worry,” he reassured them. “Our department is taking what happened to Mr. Baird tonight very seriously. We will investigate thoroughly and clear his name as quickly as possible.”
That assurance brought some relief to both Roderic and Harvey. By the time Joseph was settled in a private room, it was already the dead of night.
“Harvey, Mr. Baird asked me not to tell his wife about this. I’ll stay here tonight to look after him, so maybe you should go home and get some rest,” Roderic suggested. As Joseph’s special assistant, he was fiercely loyal. He was still shaken by the night’s events and wouldn’t dare leave Joseph’s side.
Harvey shook his head, slumping onto the sofa while keeping his eyes fixed on the bed. “No, I’ll stay too. I’m worried something might happen.”
Roderic figured there was safety in numbers and nodded in agreement. The two men found separate spots to try and get some sleep.
Suddenly, a phone rang, startling Roderic. “That’s Mr. Baird’s phone,” he whispered. “It’s probably his wife.”
Joseph’s phone was in his pocket. He pulled it out and looked at the screen. The caller ID read: Vivica. Who else but Joseph would list his own wife so formally in his contacts?
Harvey instructed, “You answer it. Just say he drank too much, got drunk, and is already asleep.” It was the only lie they could tell without alarming everyone in the middle of the night.
Roderic nodded and answered the call, his voice laced with nervous guilt. “Hello, Mrs. Baird…”
Vivica, who was staying at Riverdale Children’s Hospital, had woken up after a short nap. She had sent Joseph a message on WhatsApp before she fell asleep, telling him to let her know when he got home. When she woke up in the middle of the night and saw no reply, she worried he had had too much to drink and hadn’t made it back yet, so she called.
Hearing Roderic’s voice, Vivica understood immediately. “Roderic, where’s Joseph? He didn’t get too drunk, did he?”
