“Angry? Why would I be angry?” Vivica asked, confused.
“Because I told you I couldn’t pick you and Chaim up from the hospital this morning when you called…”
Vivica paused, taken aback. “It’s not that serious. I know you’re busy with work.”
She was never the type to be unreasonable.
In the past, Fletcher had completely neglected their family. She had rushed their sick child to the hospital alone while he was out schmoozing, leaving her exhausted and overwhelmed, yet she hadn’t gotten angry even then.
Joseph treated her far better than Fletcher ever had.
Besides, Melanie had been with her today. The Baird family driver, butler, and several maids had arrived in two large vans to escort them home with great fanfare.
If she complained after receiving that kind of treatment, she would be impossibly spoiled.
After turning Vivica down that morning, Joseph had planned to call back later to explain and soothe any hurt feelings. He hadn’t expected her to be so understanding.
But her magnanimity left him feeling a little… disappointed. It felt as though she didn’t really need him.
When he remained silent, Vivica’s eyes widened in realization. “Wait, don’t tell me you rushed back this early because you thought I was mad at you?”
“Yeah,” Joseph admitted quietly, adding, “And I was worried you’d feel uncomfortable here at the family estate.”
A fresh wave of warmth spread through Vivica’s chest.
See? How could she ever be angry at a man who was so thoughtful and considerate, always putting her first?
After she hung up, a woman entered the sunroom. Vivica recognized her as Joseph’s cousin, whose four-year-old daughter was playing with Chaim.
