Forcing her attention back to Quintina’s call, Vivica took a steadying breath before asking, “What news? Is it bad?”
“You don’t know?” Quintina exclaimed, shocked.
“It’s all over the internet. They’re saying it happened last night. That Mr. Baird became obsessed with some woman, tried to assault her, and then stabbed her when she refused him. They’re also saying he was high on drugs, completely out of his mind, and that it took a swarm of police officers to restrain him…”
Vivica’s mind went blank before Quintina could even finish. She instinctively turned to look at Joseph.
Suddenly, it all made sense—why he had seemed so off when she called him that morning. Something terrible had happened last night.
“Vivica, Mr. Baird would never do something like that,” Quintina insisted. “He must have crossed someone powerful in one of his cases. Someone set him up, right?”
Quintina trusted Joseph’s character implicitly. Even without hearing a word of explanation, she was unconditionally certain he was innocent.
Vivica’s head was still spinning. If this really happened to Joseph last night, then without a doubt, the Chase brothers in Sydville were behind it.
It was one thing for them to come after her, but now they were framing Joseph using such despicable and vicious tactics.
“Quintina, I’m just finding out about this now. Let me ask him what’s going on.”
