The law firm’s annual gala was fast approaching. Originally, Joseph had planned to bring Vivica and formally introduce her to everyone. But now, with his wife suffering from a concussion that required at least a week of rest, she would be unable to accompany him.
“I’m so sorry. I promised I’d go with you, and now I’ve broken that promise.”
Leaning against the headboard, Vivica watched Joseph change his clothes. She was simultaneously captivated by his charm and consumed by guilt.
Joseph was fastening a pin on his collar. He tilted his neck slightly, then glanced down at her. “I was looking forward to bringing my wife, so I had Fannie send out a notice that everyone could bring a guest this year. And now you can’t go. I guess I’ll just have to watch everyone else in their happy pairs while I stand there all alone.”
Vivica was surprised and amused. “You did that? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“What difference would it have made? Look at you…”
“I could have managed for you. I would have just gone and sat quietly in a corner the whole time,” Vivica said seriously.
In truth, she had really wanted to go. She wanted to meet his partners and colleagues. Being Joseph’s partner was an honor in itself, and she had just missed her chance to shine in that role.
“Forget it. There will be other opportunities. Your health is the priority. You need to recover quickly. We have more important things to do.” Joseph’s hands were busy, but his voice was gentle and reassuring. The “more important thing,” of course, was trying for a baby.
Noticing he was struggling with the collar pin without a mirror, Vivica beckoned to him. “Come here, I’ll help you.”
The man frowned, seemingly frustrated, then obediently walked over to the bed.
As Vivica sat up, he bent down and leaned toward her. They were so close she could smell the faint, clean scent on his skin. Her heart fluttered, and she unconsciously bit her lip.
