“Well, you have to think of something better.” My father thought for a moment, then suggested, “Maybe it would be easier to drive the woman away. She clearly has fewer ties to the packs, and wants nothing to do with Gideon. If she leaves for good, he won’t be able to chase her anymore.”

That had crossed my mind. Avery didn’t want Gideon, or so she claimed; it might be easier to drive her and the kid off before Gideon could snatch them up.

“I need to think about it,” I said, grabbing my car keys. “I’m going on a drive.”

My father didn’t stop me as I walked out. It was a warm, sunny morning, although there was a particular humidity in the air that spoke of rain coming later. I climbed into my car, putting on my sunglasses, and pulled out of the driveway.

The road was empty, the air perfect for driving with the windows down. I turned up the radio and rested one arm on the car door, driving with one hand as I hummed along to the music.

I must have driven for a few miles by the time I saw the small figure moving alongside the road. It was about a mile away from the Evergreen border. A small pup was bounding along the ditch, chasing what looked to be a small animal through the grass.

Curious, I slowed, leaning over to get a better look at the pup. He stopped, too, panting, and looked at me.

The moment I saw those eyes, even in wolf form, I recognized him.

That was that fucking kid.

I pulled over before I even realized what I was doing and stuck my head out the window. “Bjorn?” I called out, causing the pup to cock his head at me. “What are you doing out here all alone?”

The pup shifted back, revealing that it was indeed the little boy. I didn’t see Avery anywhere, or Sebastian, for that matter. He appeared to be completely alone outside the Evergreen borders.

He walked up to me, breathless. “Hi, Miss Fiona. Do you have any water?”

I pursed my lips and handed him my water bottle. “You didn’t answer my question,” I said as he chugged. “Where are your parents?”

“My mom is visiting Alpha Aldric.” Bjorn wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and gave me back my water bottle. There was saliva on it, which made me grimace.

“And you’re out here on your own… Why?”

He shrugged. “I wanted to explore more of the packs. My mom wouldn’t let me go with her, so I climbed over the wall and decided to check out the nearby fields. I know how to get around on my own. I’ll be safe, I promise.”

I lifted a brow, watching him. In that moment, an idea crashed through me. A risky one, but potentially very effective.

The kid was clearly a troublemaker. His expulsion was evidence of that, and now this. I could use that to my benefit.

“You said you wanted to explore?” I asked.

Bjorn nodded. “The human city doesn’t have all this nature. I want to see if I can find any cool new animals.

I smiled. “You know, I know a place. It’s really cool. I could show you.”

Bjorn’s face lit up. “Really? Are there animals there?”

“Lots.” I gestured for him to come over. “Why don’t you climb in? It’s not far?”

To his credit, the kid did hesitate for a moment, watching me warily. He wasn’t entirely stupid. But I just smiled, waiting patiently, and finally, he walked over and opened the back door.

Once he climbed in, I pulled further down the road, toward the signpost that read “Devil’s Rest.”

I pulled down the side road, onto the dirt, and began to drive toward the place I had in mind.
