Avery’s POV
“Bjorn!”
“Bjooorn!”
Our calls went unanswered across the fields. The wind was picking up now, sending ripples over the tall grass. The air smelled like rain, and the sky had darkened rapidly in the span of twenty minutes.
Sebastian and I stood at the roadside, breathless and terrified. Bjorn had been missing for four hours now, and I was this close to sending out an inter-pack alert to find him.
“Trail’s gone cold,” I said, planting my hands on my hips and looking around.
Using my familial bond and knowledge of Bjorn’s particularities from similar incidents in the past, we had managed to track his trail down to the tall, grassy fields about a mile away from the Evergreen borders. I could see his little paw prints in the muddy ditch, indicating that he had been here at some point.
But after that, there was nothing.
Sebastian scratched his head. “I don’t see any footsteps heading back.” He looked at me. “I wonder if he got into someone’s car.”
My stomach sank like a stone in water at the suggestion. Sebastian and I exchanged glances, and I knew he came to the same conclusion I did.
Gideon.
Gideon had been with me during the visit to Aldric’s pack, but he had left early. Given the approximate timeline of Bjorn’s disappearance and the location—Aldric’s pack was further in this direction, and Nightwolf was in the opposite direction—there was a very good possibility that Gideon had spotted him alongside the road and picked him up.
And if Bjorn wasn’t in Evergreen right now, then that meant only one thing.
He was still with Gideon.
Sebastian and I wasted no time. Hurrying back to Evergreen, we climbed into the car and immediately made for Nightwolf. It was over an hour’s drive away, but Sebastian sped most of the way, so we got there a little sooner.
