The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 389

Chapter 389

Avery’s POV

An all too familiar car was waiting in Aldric’s driveway when I arrived. Gideon was standing beside it, leaning against the door with his arms folded. The moment I saw him, a pang shot through my temples.

Oh, no. I knew that pain all too well.

For a moment, I considered turning around and leaving. But I had an appointment today, and Gideon had already seen me, so I had no choice.

I clenched my jaw as I put the car in park and climbed out. Gideon was already moving toward me and waving.

“Don’t,” I said, reaching for my bag in the back seat.

He stopped a few feet away. “Don’t what?”

“Just… don’t.” I grabbed my bag, shutting the car door behind me, and walked past him. I could already feel à headache coming

Gideon, of course, followed, which just made another throb shoot through my eyes.

“Are you here just to rub yesterday in or something?” I snapped, not slowing my pace or looking at him.

“What are you talking about, Avery?”

“If you have more gifts for my son, he won’t get them this time. I’m not gonna let you try to weasel your way into his life with presents.’

Gideon looked at me. “Wait, so you gave the gifts to him after all?”

I didn’t answer that, but I didn’t need to. I was pretty sure that my face gave it all away, because Gideon smiled somewhat, his lips tugging slightly upwards at the corners.

“I hope he liked them,” he said.

Ignoring him, I headed into the clinic, where Aldric was waiting. Gideon followed me, claiming that he was here strictly for business purposes and nothing more. But I knew the truth-he was trying to spend as much time with me as possible.

As if, by following me around like a lost puppy, he would get me to change my mind about us.

Well, it wasn’t happening. Despite what Melissa had said yesterday, I was still pretty certain that Gideon wanted one thing and one thing only: Bjorn. His heir. And he would say or do anything to make that happen.

I was not going to let him trap me as his mistress, a pure physical outlet and not someone he could truly see himself loving as a real wife and mate, and that was final. No amount of seemingly “kind” gestures or sweet words could change that. 2

The young girl we were testing the Lycan Root on was already in the clinic, propped up in one of the hospital beds. Unlike the last boy, she was awake, although just barely. She was tiny, with mousey brown hair and freckles all over her face. She looked up at me with glassy blue eyes as I approached.

“Gina, this is Miss Avery,” the nurse said gently as I set my bag down beside the bed. “She’s got some special medicine that might help you and all kinds of other kids get better.”

The girl looked at me warily. “I’ve tried lots of medicine,” she said. Her voice was raw and hoarse, which was so out of place ou such a little girl. “None of it makes me feel better.”

My heart ached, but I forced what I hoped was a reassuring smile. “Well, maybe this time it’ll be different.”

“Okay…” She didn’t seem convinced, but didn’t argue.

The girl didn’t flinch at all as the nurse placed an IV in her arm; the small blue and yellow bruises indicated that she’d had that done many times. The nurse then took my liquid sample of Lycan Root and injected it into the IV bag, slowly turning the liquid within a deep golden color.

Gideon and Aldric watched quietly as the nurse worked. I sat on the edge of the girl’s bed and pulled out a small teddy bear I had picked up on my way. Her eyes remained glassy, but she took it and clutched it in her small hand.
