Chapter 387
Avery’s POV

The sun rose high and hot the next morning, bringing with it the sound of cicadas buzzing in the grass. and a warm steam rising from the dewy ground before eight o’clock even struck.
I had just finished my coffee and was preparing my things to head to Aldric’s clinic. Our trial was beginning there today, and I wanted to be present for the initial tests.
Bjorn, who was surprisingly already awake at this hour, came bounding down the stairs just as I was reaching for my purse in the hallway. He was still wearing his new sneakers. I honestly wasn’t even sure if he had taken them off last night to sleep.
“Where are you going?” he asked, hopping down the last two steps and skidding to a stop in front of me.
“Do you remember Alpha Aldric?” I asked. “When we went to his pack for that party?”
“Yeah…”
“Well, I’m going there today to give my medicine to some kids. I’ll be there all day, so don’t cause any trouble here, okay?” I said.
Bjorn looked at me. “Can I come with you?”
“I don’t know, Bjorn. I’ve got a lot of work to do today…”
“Pleaaaase?” Bjorn clasped his hands together and gave me those big puppy-dog eyes that almost never failed to make me cave in to any request. “I won’t get in the way or anything.”
I planted one hand on my hip. “Why do you want to come so badly? I’m gonna be working. It’ll be boring, and you’ll be trapped in the clinic all day. It’s so nice out, you’d be much happier staying here where you can be with your friends.”
Bjorn groaned like I had just told him he had to eat an entire head of broccoli, which he hated.
“I’m getting so bored here!” he complained.
“But you love it here.”
“Yeah, I do, but I know the whole pack like the back of my hand now. I want to explore more of the packs. There’s so much I haven’t gotten to see yet.”
I looked at Bjorn, seeing the desperation in his expression, and almost gave in. Almost. But then I thought back to yesterday, and how Gideon had looked at me like he would do anything to get close to Bjorn, and it still made me very uneasy.
If Sebastian had been coming with me today, it would have been a different story. But I still felt a little unsafe traveling the packs without him, especially with Bjorn by my side. If Gideon showed up, I wanted the extra protection of having my “husband” with us.

“Sorry, bud,” I said, ruffling Bjorn’s hair. “Maybe next time.”
“Maybe?” Bjorn sighed. “Maybe’ just means ‘no’ in Mom Language!”
I smiled slightly, but didn’t give in. “I’ll see you later, kiddo, Spend some time outside today, I promise you’re not missing much.”
Bjorn’s groan echoed all the way to the car. When I backed out of the driveway, I could see him standing in the doorway, pouting at me.
Fiona’s POV
“You must do something about that woman, Fiona,”
I finished off the rest of my tea and set the cup aside. A servant immediately came to take it away, and once they were gone, I looked at my father.
He was furious, of course. I couldn’t blame him; I was furious, 100.
Avery had been a thorn in my side since her sudden return. At first, I thought that Gideon would accept my proposal in exchange for information-that he would simply take her as a mistress, giving me the
title of Luna.
But then he told me that he would never give me the title, and that it belonged to Avery and Avery alone.
