The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 386

Chapter 386

Before she disappeared, I called out, “How do you know?”

Melissa didn’t stop walking. She didn’t even turn. She just said over her shoulder, “The trees tell me things.”

I blinked a few times, certain I had misheard. Before I could ask what she meant by that, she was gone, disappearing around the bend in the path.

I stood there for a long moment, looking down at the bag in my hand. Guilt sent a pang shooting through my chest, and before I knew it, I was turning back to the house.

A few minutes later, I found Bjorn in his room, reading a book. That took me by surprise, because in the human lands he wasn’t much of a reader. But I didn’t say anything for fear of making him stop out of embarrassment.

“Hey,” I said, shutting the door behind me. “I have something for you.”

Bjorn sat up on his bed and perked up as I handed him the bag. “What’s this?”

“A gift.” I sat on the edge of the bed. “Open it.”

Bjorn’s whole face lit up. He tore into the bag with gusto, gasping at the various items nestled within. Upon pulling out the sneakers, he immediately put them on and ran a lap around the room, laughing. Then, he pulled out the toys and practically squealed with delight.

“You got me all this?” he asked, looking at me with his arms full.

I opened my mouth to tell him that yes, I had. Because it seemed easier. But then I thought about Melissa’s words, and I just… couldn’t lie.

“It was Alpha Gideon,” I said. “He stopped by and left it for you.”

Bjorn’s eyes sparkled. “Really?” He clutched the boxes to his chest even tighter. “That’s so cool! He’s the best.”

My chest tightened. I chose not to comment on that, and simply watched as Bjorn began opening the box for the DIY airplane kit. He immediately started tearing into the various pieces, scattering them all over the bed.

“Bjorn, buddy, maybe you should do that on the dining table or something,” I said. “And read the instructions first.”

“Yeah, maybe you’re right.” Bjorn began shoving the items back into the box. “Maybe Alpha Gideon can come over and help me.”

I swallowed hard. “Sebastian will be home soon. I’m sure he’d be happy to do it with you.”

“Yeah, that would be cool, but…” Bjorn looked up at me. “I would really like to do it with Gideon. I like him a lot. So does my wolf.”

“Your wolf…” I hated the implications of that, and almost didn’t want to know the details, but I asked anyway, “Why do you feel such a connection to him, do you think?”

Bjorn shrugged, “I’m not sure, I just feel like we know each other somehow. Like this.” He held up his index and middle finger, which were crossed over each other.

I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could say anything, the sound of Sebastian’s voice echoed through the house. Bjorn looked at me, and I nodded, giving him the go-ahead to scamper off with his new toys. I sat there on the edge of his bed, listening to his new sneakers pound down the stairs.

Once the house was quiet again, I sighed, running my hands over my face, and didn’t move for a long time.

These days, it was becoming more and more apparent to me just how much of a bond truly existed between Bjorn and his father.
