Chapter 380
Avery’s POV
Damn. That felt… good.
I knew it shouldn’t. At the end of the day, Fiona was young, and she was a product of a father who basically sold her off to an
older man. I was aware of that.
But then again, I had been through a world of shit at her age and I didn’t insult people for no reason, so… there was that.
Also, the look on her face-first confusion, then realization, then the distinctive pink cheeks of humiliation-was too satisfying to feel bad about what I had said. Maybe it meant she had learned her lesson about belittling her elders, especially during business meetings.
The hallway was silent now. Sebastian and Claire, who had previously been having their own discussion off to the side, turned to us and watched. Aldric drew in a sharp breath. Fiona was trembling, clearly furious, her manicured nails digging into Gideon’s
bicep.
I maintained a polite smile, although I did glance at Gideon, half expecting him to tell me off for insulting his future wife.
Surprisingly, though, he didn’t. In fact, I could see the barest hint of a smirk tugging at one corner of his mouth.
Did he… agree with me?
Before anyone could say anything, the sound of a spaceship toy suddenly echoed through the house. Bjorn came barrelling down the stairs, holding his new toy that Sebastian just bought for him over his head and making pew-pew noises.
When he saw Gideon standing there, he gasped, then-much to my chagrin-he slid down the railing and dropped down at the bottom, thankfully unharmed.
“Mr. Gideon!” he said, rushing up to him and holding his toy out. “Check this out! It’s a real T-Star Fighter Jet 2000!”
“Wow. That is really neat.” Gideon crouched in front of him, smiling, and let Bjorn show him the toy. Bjorn started pressing all of the buttons and explained what each one did in detail.
I watched them for a moment, feeling something warm blossom in my chest that had been budding there for a while now. I hated to admit it, but Gideon was good with him, and Bjorn took to him like a moth to a flame in a way he didn’t latch onto anyone else. Not even Sebastian, who he admittedly liked quite a lot, had that effect on him.
For a second, I almost imagined a life unlived-one with the two of them together, from the start, as father and son. A family, happy and close. The very thing I had dreamed of for so long, but could never fully provide for him. 11
I quickly pushed the image down, deciding that it wasn’t worth the pain, and turned away, reaching for my purse and jacket hanging nearby.
While Gideon and Bjorn were distracted, Fiona walked up to me and cleared her throat. I looked over to see her standing there with her arms folded tightly across her chest and a sour look on her face.
“That was uncalled for,” she said quietly, keeping her voice low so only I could hear.
I took my time putting on my jacket before I answered. “So was essentially calling me old and unfit to be here,” I pointed out.
Her lips puckered. “That’s not what I meant.”
“So you admit it,” I said, slinging, my purse over my shoulder. “You sald the wrong thing because you’re young and out of you depth, and you don’t know what you’re getting into.”
Fiona’s face drained of color. Her hands dropped to her sides, fingers twitching there. I could practically smell the urge to throttle me on her breath.

“I’ve tried to give you grace, Fiona,” I said, not bothering to keep my voice low. I didn’t care if anyone else heard. “I can look past the fact that you’re marrying a man twice your age because I don’t think it’s your fault-but the nasty comments are all you. Watch yourself, because you have no idea who you’re dealing with.”
Fiona gasped, but I ignored her and walked over to the door. I could hear her saying something to Gideon, but I didn’t linger long enough to make out what it was. Although, as I stepped outside, I could have sworn I heard him mutter the words: ” Deserved it…”
The restaurant Claire picked out was in the same region as The Splendor, although thankfully, we didn’t pass by the lounge; I wasn’t sure if I could handle looking at the place just yet after what happened. Instead, we went to a nice bistro overlooking a lake, with an appetizer menu the length of my forearm and a lot of seafood options.
The host led us to a table big enough for all of us in the corner-Bjorn insisted on coming, even though I knew he would get bored-and took our drink orders before walking away. A few minutes later, the waiter arrived. I ordered a cobb salad for myself. Bjorn got chicken fingers and fries. I was definitely going to steal a few of those when he wasn’t looking.
While we waited for our food, we launched into more discussions regarding the business arrangement. Alpha Aldric had some lingering questions about the arrangement after the meeting, which Claire and I answered with ease.
Gideon, for his part, didn’t engage much in the conversation. That was partially because Bjorn had sat next to him, placing himself between us, and kept showing Gideon whatever he was drawing on his placemat.
It was also partially because, rather than speaking, he would glance at me more often than not.
I pretended not to notice, but it wasn’t easy. I could feel Gideon’s eyes burning into the side of my head, making that side of my face almost seem hotter than the other.
I didn’t look over at him, though. Because I could hear him talking to Bjorn, and I feared seeing the same dangerous image in my head again of a reality that could never fully come to fruition. I also really didn’t want to acknowledge Fiona’s angry glare, so.
