The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 378

Chapter 378

Avery’s POV

In a strange way, it almost didn’t surprise me that Fiona showed up unannounced. She seemed to have a penchant for it, so it was just par for the course at this point.

But what I didn’t expect was for her to walk up the front steps with a briefcase dangling from one hand, pushing her sunglasses up on her head, and act like she belonged in this meeting.

Fiona smiled, either totally oblivious to the fact that none of us had expected for her to show up, or deliberately ignoring it.

“I came as soon as I could,” she said. “It seems I’m just on time.”

I looked at Claire, who shared my expression of exasperation. She knew all about Gideon and his child bride, and we both had the same feelings about it.

It was gross, and neither of us really wanted anything to do with her.

“Sorry,” Claire said, breaking the silence first, “just on time for what, exactly?”

Fiona shot her a perfunctory glance. “The meeting, of course!” She grabbed Gideon’s arm and clutched it tightly, her smile tightening as she looked up at him. “You did tell them I’d be joining today, right, darling?”

I folded my arms and looked at Gideon, half expecting him to say that yes, he did intend for Fiona to join our business arrangement. Part of me almost wanted him to say it so I could break off the contract altogether and tell him to leave.

But to my surprise, he looked just as taken aback as the rest of us did.

“I don’t recall us discussing that,” he said.

Fiona’s face dropped briefly, although she quickly smoothed it over with another smile. “You must have forgotten. I was supposed to take notes?”

“No, we definitely never talked about that.” Gideon’s voice was cold and firm. “You shouldn’t show up to things uninvited, Fiona. It’ll give you a bad reputation.”

Fiona said nothing, but the way her lips pressed together, creating thin lines around her mouth that looked out of place on an eighteen years old, spoke volumes.

No one said anything for a moment. Finally, just wanting to get the meeting over with, I muttered, “You can join us.”

Claire, Sebastian, and even Gideon looked at me in surprise, but I ignored them and headed inside. As we made our way to the conference room and took our seats. I noticed that Gideon took a spot between Aldric and Sebastian before Fiona could sit.

Not to be diminished, however, she grabbed a chair and squeezed herself between him and Aldric.

Gideon rubbed his hands together under the table, clearly frustrated. I watched him out of the corner of my eye, intrigued by the obvious tension between him and his fiancee, but I decided not to dwell on it. It didn’t involve me.

The meeting went on without a hitch at first. Sebastian brought up a few talking points about the specifics regarding the contract, which Claire added to in her own way. I then went on to video call my lead scientist in the human lands, who outlined the first steps of the clinical trial. Then, I gave a short presentation on my expectations for the timeline.

Fiona sat quietly, for the most part, aside from the scratching of her pen in her notebook. I had to give her credit for that; she didn’t get involved.

It wasn’t until after the meeting had concluded and we were preparing to go out for lunch that she spoke up.

Gideon approached me after the meeting, jogging to catch up with me in the hallway. I didn’t slow my pace, but it didn’t matter. He fell into step beside me with ease.
