Chapter 373
Avery’s POV
My head was spinning more than it should have been.
I realized that now, as I stared at my reflection in the bathroom mirror.
This was more than a glass of wine and a single strong cocktail. My face was swimming in front of me, like there were two of me staring back from the mirror. The tiles on the wall weren’t staying in the same place, and I had to grip the edge of the bathroom sink to keep myself upright.
I had been drugged.
That was the single thought that pierced the fog in my mind. I could already feel my consciousness beginning to fade, and I knew it would be a matter of minutes before I lost it completely. I had to do something.
My fingers trembled as I reached into my clutch, fumbling for my phone. I managed to grasp it, but unlocking it was an entirely different beast. I could hardly lift my arm enough to level it in front of me for the facial scanner, and the buttons on the screen were swimming around, making it impossible to type in my code.
Somehow, I remembered to use my thumbprint scanner. I unlocked my phone, nearly dropping it in the process, then clumsily navigated to Sebastian’s contact information.
Before I could call him, I heard the lock click behind me.
I whirled around so fast that I stumbled, falling directly into a pair of waiting arms.
It wasn’t Sebastian. It wasn’t even Gideon.
It was the bartender.
“Did it kick in yet?” he murmured, more to himself than to me. He looked at me, then smiled when he noticed my current state. “Perfect,” He backed me against the wall, turning me around, and began working at his pants. “This will be quick. Be a good girl and don’t struggle, and I promise you’ll enjoy it just as much as I’m about to.”
I felt like I was going to throw up. My head spun dizzyingly as he pressed me against the wall, tugging my dress up around my hips.
For a moment, I almost let him do it.
Almost.
But I wasn’t completely gone yet. I could still fight, and I wasn’t going down without one. The moment the bartender wrapped his arm around my neck, fight or flight kicked in, and I reacted with what sense I had left. I dropped my fangs, letting my wolf’s strength surge, and

bit down. Hard.
Blood spurted everywhere immediately. The bartender cursed, stumbling back, his half-hard cock still hanging out of his pants. I whirled, snarling, but fell to my hands and knees. The tiles rushed up to meet my face, and pain shot through the side of my skull.
The last thing I remembered before everything went dark was a single thought piercing my mind.
“Gideon! HELP!”
Gideon’s POV
I jumped to my feet, ignoring Fiona’s protests. Avery’s voice rang in my mind, clear and full of anguish. She was in trouble, and she was calling to me, and I wasn’t about to sit here while she potentially got hurt.
The source of her anguish was coming from the bathroom. I rushed that way and tried the handle, but it was locked. “Avery?” I knocked. No answer. “Avery, are you in there?”
Nothing. Just quiet. But I sw

Then, I saw movement under the door. I heard a groan, followed by the sound of rushing footsteps.
Something really was wrong.
“Avery!” I slammed my shoulder into the door, feeling the wood begin to splinter already.” AVERY!”
There was no answer. It took a few tries, my shouts drawing a crowd of confused patrons, but finally, I managed to break down the door. I gasped at the scene I saw and rushed into the
room.
“Avery!” I dropped to one knee beside where she was laying on the floor. Her dress was hiked up around her hips, her arms and legs splayed out against the tiles, unconscious. There was blood on her face.
She was alone now, but someone had done this to her.
And I knew exactly who.
I carefully fixed her dress then scooped her into my arms, one arm under her legs and the other supporting her back, and turned just as Sebastian rushed into the room. His eyes widened.

Before he could reach her, I stepped back, holding her tighter. “Don’t you fucking dare touch her,” I snarled. “You drugged her, didn’t you? You’re trying to take advantage of her.”
Sebastian’s hands fell to his sides. “What? I would never-” As if realizing something, his eyes narrowed again, and he took a step closer. “How do I know you weren’t the one who drugged her?”
“I would never do something like that.”
“Right, because all of your recent attempts to win her back have gone exceptionally well.”
“That’s bullshit, and you know it. You’re just trying to project the blame-”
“It… Wasn’t… Either of you…’
Avery’s voice was low and hoarse, but we both heard it. I looked down at her, finding her eyelashes fluttering against her cheeks. With a shaking hand, she slowly pointed at the bathroom window, which I only now noticed was open.
“I… bit him… He… ran…”
I looked at the blood on her face, realizing for the first time that it wasn’t hers. Sebastian rushed over to the window and leaned out.
“I see him!” he gasped, already climbing through. “It was the fucking bartender!”
What happened after that was chaos. Sebastian hunted down the bartender while I called the paramedics. Avery hadn’t finished the drugged cocktail, thankfully, but would need to go to the hospital.
I held her hand the entire time, although she did hold mine back. Her fingers remained limp and cold. I told myself that she was just too out of it to notice, but a small part of me thought differently-that even in her current state, want anything to do with me. thought differently—that even in her current state, s
