Lilly didn’t want her parents to worry, so she managed a small smile. “Alright, Mom.”
“That’s my girl. Come on, let’s have dinner.”
Just then, someone called her name. “Lilly.”
She looked up and saw Roger, the son of the Lee family, who’d known her family for years.
Roger had that calm, thoughtful vibe. He greeted them with an easy warmth. “Lilly, Mrs. Lynch, what a coincidence. Are you here for dinner too?”
May nodded. “Yes, Roger. Are you here with your parents?”
Roger pointed ahead. “I’m here with my mom. She’s just up there.”
May smiled. “Lilly, why don’t you stay and chat with Roger for a bit? I’ll go say hi to Miranda.”
Lilly nodded. “Alright.”
May walked off, leaving Lilly and Roger standing together. Roger glanced at her, a little concerned. “Lilly, you seem thinner than before. Is something bothering you?”
Lilly shook her head. “Not really. I don’t think I’ve lost weight. Honestly, I feel like I’ve put some on.”
Roger gave her a gentle smile. “You know, real beauty always shines through, no matter what.”
That made Lilly laugh, for real this time. Roger was known as the most well-read guy in their circle. He was the youngest Ivy League professor anyone knew, so he always had a way of making everything he said sound poetic.
“Thanks for the compliment, Roger.”
As she spoke, she noticed a nearby bookshelf with a familiar cover. Roger’s name was on it.
“Hey, is this your book?”
Roger nodded. “Yeah, that’s mine. It’s about archaeology, though. You might not find it very interesting.”
Lilly grinned. “Let me see for myself.”
