Jason’s voice broke the silence. “Frank, seriously, don’t joke around like that again.”
Hanna froze right where she sat.
Jason’s tone was sharp. “I really appreciate everything Hanna’s done for me these past three years, but we’re just friends. Friends don’t joke about that kind of thing.”
The warmth on Hanna’s cheeks faded in a heartbeat. Her face went pale. Jason had never given her any hope, and deep down, she knew how he felt.
Still, she wasn’t ready to give up. Jason were a good man. She was determined to hold on to him.
How many couples in the world actually got married because they were in love? She was convinced that she was the one who suited him best.
Frank sighed. “Okay, okay, I’ll stop. I’ll just focus on driving.”
No one said anything after that. Jason pulled out his phone and opened Lilly’s chat.
He wanted to text her.
But when he started to type, his fingers just hovered over the screen. He couldn’t figure out what to say.
…
When Lilly got home, her father had already been discharged from the hospital. He and May were sitting together in the living room.
Mr. Lynch stood up as soon as she walked in. “Lilly, why are you home so late?”
Lilly hurried over. “Dad, sit down. I went to see William today. He said he’s not going to end our partnership.”
May’s face lit up. “Really? That’s amazing! Did you go see him by yourself?”
Lilly shook her head. “Mom, Dad, I ran into Mr. Farill. He helped me.”
“Mr. Farill?” May’s eyes widened. “You mean that new business hotshot, Jason?”
Mr. Lynch had heard of Jason. The business world wasn’t that big, and someone who could take a company public in just three years was bound to get noticed.
Lilly nodded. “Yeah, him.”
Mr. Lynch looked confused. “How do you know Mr. Farill? Why would he help you?”
Lilly didn’t want to keep anything from her parents. “Mom, Dad, Jason is Jace.”
